How and when do I apply to post-Foundation Programme specialist/GP training?
PMETB and the medical royal colleges have been charged with developing new specialist training programmes. Post-foundation training will involve a new integrated and streamlined training programme combining SHO level basic specialist training and SpR level higher specialist training.
The method of selection into specialty training will be determined by December 2005 for the first cohort to enter specialty training in August 2007.
Selection will not be based on the placements you undertook in the Foundation Programme,. There will be no ranking system for doctors coming out of the programme.
What criteria will be used to select doctors into specialty training in the future?
There are several models currently being considered by the medical royal colleges and PMETB. The process of selection will be by open and fair competition. Details of specialty selection will be available by the end of 2005.
When will the new models of specialty training be implemented?
The first cohort of foundation doctors will enter the new specialty training system in August 2007.
What will happen to the SHOs and SpRs currently in the training system when we switch to the new specialty training system?
In 2007, when the new specialty training will begin, there will be measures in place to ensure the doctors in the current training system are not disadvantaged.
