This i a short cut article to give a breif outlook for International Graduate who needs to pursue their medical career in Ontario Province of Canada. Every Province has thir own set of rules. I'll be talking specific about ON. But do not take my information as granted I took it by reading various website once I was applying and going thru my residency proceeding. My information can have some error or lack of knowledge too.
An International Medical Graduate (IMG) is one who has his or her undergraduate medical degree in a jurisdiction outside of Canada or United States and is intending to immigrate to Canada in near future or is already Permanent Resident (PR) or is Canadian Citizen.
They must know that their medical school should be listed in World Dictionary of Medical Schools (WDMS) which is published by the World Health Organization (WHO). (www.who.int/hrh/wdms/en/). You can go to the website, click on the country where the medical school is located and then you will know whether the school is listed or not.
The candidates who are IMG can apply for these categories mention below:
1)Clerkship: In Province of Ontario Clerkship is defined as the final year of undergraduate medical school. i.e. junior most position. This is almost equivalent to our house job or internship. IMG who wish to pursue their internship within Canada can enter into clerkship program. For entering into this stream one MUST be PR or CITIZEN. Upon selection they will complete a nine month of clerkship program and then residency position is reserved for them. (this is the best way to entry into residency position)
2)FAMILY MEDICINE Stream: this is two years program corresponding to general physician; one can be a foreigner but is intending to immigrate to Canada. (mostly applicant apply in this field)
3)SPECIALITY Stream: this is 4 to 5 years program of specialty training depending on the specialty chosen, e.g. internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics & gyneacology (OBGYN), pediatrics etc., one can be a foreigner but should show intention to have immigration. If he has one or two years of postgraduate training in the field for which he wants to apply then this is a plus point.
The specialist stream applicant can enter into level of PGY1 or PGY2 (postgraduate year) depending up the years of training they have.
PGY1 will be listed as general applicants while PGY2 will be listed as advance specialty applicants.
4)Practice Ready Assessments (PRA): This category refers to the applicants who have full certifications and or professional independent practice in another jurisdiction (e.g. General Practitioner GPs) and have fill certification and or professional independent practice at the specialty for which they want to apply e.g. ENT, pediatrician etc. they are assessed for the period of six months under supervise clinical setting to ensure that they are ready for practice in Ontario Province.
a.In simpler words, one can apply in this category who is already a physician /consultant e.g. GP (general physician) or any specialist like ENT or eye or pediatrician in his country and now want to practice in ONTARIO. He will apply in this category.
All of the applicant who wishes to apply in any of the four categories which are being mention above must have passed Medical Council of Canada Evaluating Examination MCCEE & MCC Qualifying Exam part 1 MCCQE1.
This MCCEE exam is offer thrice in a year outside Canada as well and can also be giving by fourth and final years of medical students.
MCCQE1 only offers twice a year & in Canada only
Please refer to official website of Medical Council of Canada mcc.ca for further information regarding this exam.
Once the applicant had passed this exam and decided which category he needs to apply then he has to send his application to International Medical Graduate- ONTARIO (imgo.ca)
