Australia

There are currently a number of Alternative Pathway programs for medical practitioners, particularly those in rural and remote areas, to participate in appropriate educational programs in order to obtain vocational recognition.

These include

  • NCEPMC Alternative Pathway Program
  • Pilot Remote Vocational Training Scheme (PRVTS)
Note - Fellowship of the Royal College of general Practitioners (FRACGP) is currently the only recognised requirement for vocational registration under the Health Insurance Act.

NCEPMC Alternative Pathway Program

The NCEPMC Alternative Pathway Program is a new flexible education pathway, designed by the National Consortium for Education in Primary Medical Care (NCEPMC).

The consortium is comprised of the RACGP, the Australian Divisions of General Practice (ADGP) and all twelve Australian Medical Schools, and is specifically designed to assist doctors currently in medical practice obtain general practice vocational registration.

Doctors enrol in a Graduate Certificate in General Practice provided by distance education, (approximately 400 hours of study)

On completion of all practice and educational requirements the candidates are assessed for the FRACGP by examination or practice-based assessment (PBA).

You'll find more information about the NCEPMC program at the RACGP web site. To go there, simply click HERE.

Pilot Remote Vocational Training Scheme (PRVTS)

Initiated in 1999, the PRVTS is a jointly run program by the RACGP and ACRRM specifically designed to assist doctors in isolated and remote solo practices.

The program utilises video conferencing and internet-based learning that enables comprehensive vocational training to be achieved in a remote setting.

On completion of all practice and educational requirements the candidates are assessed for the FRACGP by examination or practice-based assessment (PBA).

Successful candidates are also awarded the FACRRM.

You'll find more information about the PRVTS at their web site. To go there, simply click HERE.

The Practice Eligible Route

The Practice Eligible Route is open to registered medical practitioners who have completed four years full time approved general practice experience, or its part time equivalent and are Members or Associates of the RACGP.

The RACGP recognises general practice experience from the following countries, United Kingdom, Eire, Canada, USA, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Malaysia, South Africa and Singapore as being equivalent to that in Australia.

Candidates with overseas experience from other countries are required to provide full details of the nature of their overseas general practice experience to the RACGP.

The RACGP also recognises certain qualifications for eligibility to enrol in the RACGP Examination. Please refer to the RACGP website for further details.

You'll find further details at the RACGP web site. To go there, simply click HERE.

Australian College of Rural & Remote Medicine (ACRRM) Professional Development Program

ACRRM's vocational training programs in Rural Medicine have been developed by rural doctors - for rural doctors.

The programs are based on a comprehensive curriculum that prepares doctors to attain the full scope of knowledge, skills and attitudes required to provide quality health care to rural communities.

The training programs are coordinated and supervised at rural or regional levels by networks (consortia) of ACRRM Fellows, members and qualified educationalists.

Because the educational needs and learning preferences of individuals differ, the Fellowship training program of ACRRM is divided into two distinct pathways:
  • Vocational Preparation Pathway- structured learning ideal for new graduates
  • Independent Pathway- self-directed learning ideal for experienced practitioners.
Currently, fellowship of the Australian College of Rural & Remote Medicine (FACRRM) is not a recognised qualification for vocational registration under the Health Insurance Act.

You can find more information about ACRRM at their web site.

To go there, simply click HERE.
