Council may grant you exemption from this requirement if your first language/mother tongue is English and you have been educated and employed as a doctor in an English speaking environment.
b. Medical Knowledge - a pass within the last five years in the United States Medical Licensing Examination - USMLE Steps 1 & 2 or its equivalent, e.g. FMGEMS basic medical science and clinical science.

To sit NZREX you must first have satisfied the English and Medical Knowledge requirements. You would normally not be eligible for admission to NZREX unless you have satisfactorily completed a 12 month post-graduate internship acceptable to New Zealand.
Probationary Registration:This is gained once requirements are fulfilled. It requires the doctor to work under supervision for a period of at least one year in a hospital or general practice. If at the end of that time, a favourable report is received on the standard of knowledge, skills and competence and any other requirements the council will accept in application for general registration.
Any work to be completed by a doctor in a New Zealand hospital with probationary registration would require them first obtaining a temporary Work Permit.
If points are to be claimed under the General Skills Category for Immigration, then general registration must be obtained by the applicant.
