Requirements for Training in Radiology in UK

Radiology

The Royal College of Radiologists sets the regulations, standards and curriculum for specialist training in clincial radiology. Details of these are available on the RCR website Training pages. An information pack for those considering UK specialist training in clinical radiology is also available from the Training Administrator, whose contact details are given on the RCR website.



Based on these regulations and experience of the selection process, the Society of Radiologists in Training has drawn up recommendations on the minimum, standard and optimum requirements for candidates applying for a radiology training post. Detailed questions about eligibility for radiology training should be addressed to the Radiology Training Administrator at the college (see above).

Suggested requirements for doctors applying for a radiology training post in the UK:

Minimum:

Medical degree
2 years postgraduate clinical experience
GMC registration (limited or full)
English test (IELTS) and Medical English and Essential skills test (PLAB) for overseas applicants, details on GMC website
Basic computer skills
Understanding of research & audit

Standard:
3 years clinical experience
Part 1 of a higher medical exam (MRCP, MRCS, MRCOG, FRCA etc.)
Previous radiology project (audit, case report)
Published abstract
Good computer skills

Optimum:
3-4 years clinical experience
Higher medical exam
Part 1 FRCR
Previous radiology attachment (i.e. medical student special study module, work experience, etc.)
Completed audit
Radiology publication
Advanced computer skills (e.g. European Computer Driving License)
