NZ Dental Council’s Decisions on Your Application for Registration as a Dentist

Council may require you to sit and pass examinations to demonstrate a reasonable command of English and sufficient knowledge and experience to practise dentistry in New Zealand.
You may be required to sit all or some of the following examinations.

English Examination IELTS, OET, TOEFL or approved equivalent

This examination establishes whether you have a reasonable command of the English
language.

Written Examination

This examination:

•Establishes whether you have a reasonable understanding of the scientific basis of dentistry
and can apply that knowledge to clinical situations.

•Includes essay, short answer and multi-choice questions together with visual material

Clinical Examination

This examination tests your skills and knowledge in providing oral health care.

New Zealand Conditions of Practice Examination
This examination tests your understanding of the cultural, social and legislative framework for
the delivery of care in New Zealand.

If you have been required to sit and pass an English examination you must do this before
you can proceed to the Written and Clinical and NZCOP Examinations.

Refund of Registration Application Fee

If you decide to withdraw your application for registration any refund will be calculated on a cost
recovery basis.

Refunds are calculated on the following sliding scale:

% of application fee refunded

Overseas Dentists applying for registration as a General Dentist Withdrawal prior to assessment by Registration Advisor 85%

Withdrawal after assessment by Registration Advisor 65%

Withdrawal after consideration by Dental Council 0%


Overseas Dentists applying for registration as a Specialist

Withdrawal prior to assessment by Council appointed assessor 85%

Withdrawal after assessment by Council appointed assessor 55%

Withdrawal after consideration by Specialist Registration Committee 30%

Withdrawal after consideration by Dental Council 0%
