Hello EVERYONE,
i am desperately looking for some information reagarding application to step 1.
DO I NEED THE PRINCIPAL/ DEANS SIGNATURE ANYWHERE?(FORM 186- IDENTIFICATION DOESNT ESSENTIALLY NEED IT,A NOTARY CAN DO)
wHAT EXACTLY IS FORM 345- MEDICAL SCHOOL RELEASE REQUEST? I CANT UNDERSTAND MUCH FROM THE FORMAT GIVEN.
TO BE PRECISE DO I NEED PRINCI'S SIGN THERE?
I HAVE 1. MEDICAL SCHOOL TRANSCRIPT
2. MEDICAL SCHOOL DIPLOMA
3. PHOTOGRAPH
4. ACCESSIBILITY TO NOTARY,PRINTER,CREDIT CARD,COURIER
WOULD I NEED ANYTHING ELSE TO APPLY FOR STEP-1?
I DONT WANT TO START THE FORM AND GET STUCK IN BETWEEN. SO PLEASE ALL U PEOPLE WHO HAVE APPLIED, PLEASE HELP.

Yes i think, time would be enough but u'll have plan properly. Application process starts on 1st September but goes for long time after that. U can apply with even score awaited so even if u take all ur steps, stay by aug end, u'll be in good time for match.
My studies r on d rocks!  But i'm trying hard..

U can take it in any sequence, ECFMG has no objections.

Yes, u can take them in any sequence. Though taking step 2 CS early might not meet approval of visa officer at times..

Waise discussed many times but still i'll repeat my views..
Taking steps after MBBS will MOST of the times fetch u better marks than during MBBS.
The only advantage of taking step 1 during or after 2nd MBBS is that u save time after MBBS, can finish off steps a few months earlier which might allow u to save a year.
Otherwise chances of performing better is ALWAYS higher after MBBS cos Step 1 is highly clinically oriented. Those who have gotten good marks after taking step1 during MBBS work hard on clinical vignettes n questions.
Now u gotta decide if u can raise ur clinical problem solving enuf to fetch u high scores on step1. In that case u might save a year. But if not, u might compromise ur scores.
Do meet some1 personally, who took step1 during MBBS, b4 deciding cos they can tell u d ground realities.
Thats my 2 cents..

I heard that 5 yrs after graduation it is very difficult to get a residency . is it true . what r my chances of getting residency in gyn obs . I am in big dilemma now . plea........se help me please. thanks in advance.

Yes its a bit difficult to get a residency few years after graduation. But that doesn't mean its impossible. Its just a bit tougher. So what u can do is add some other positives to ur CV..
U just have to remember that u gotta get good scores and if u have some publications under ur belt, that wud be a huge advantage. Get some USCE, US LORs and u'll have a decent chance of getting a residency almost at par with recent graduates, given that luck and similar factors don't go against u.

this is concerning your article on USMLE... you had mentiomed that after applying for everything, we should get it sealed by the dean of the medical college... is that really required or is the seal of any government official enough??? its been quite sometime since i left my medical college and currently im not working anywhere... U have to get Form 186 signed by EITHER Dean or a Notary public, not just any government official.

Kaplan Qbook and Qbank are undisputedly good. Usmle world is also gaining popularity these days. Others r NMS, BSS etc.

When u apply and send form 344, 345 they automatically start the process of verification of ur medical degrees. But that doesn't hinder ur steps, Verification has to be completed b4 u r awarded ECFMG certification.

Finally I made up my mind thanks to rxpg, and started preparing 4 mle from yesterday. is there sufficient time for me to make for 2008 match . if so when should i take each step if i go in order of step 1 , 2ck &2cs.

Usually with intensive preps 5-6 months are more than enough. By intensive preps i mean an avg of 7-8 hrs a day. Please also refer the following link for such info: Only RxPG members can see links here! Register or Login!

But remember these r pretty subjective calculations. Take d exam when u r urself confident enuf.

Apply minimum 3 months before exam, ECFMG doesn't accept the application 6 months before d exam.
Exam takes place on all days of d year except national holidays and first 15 days of the year. For complete info on USMLE exams visit their official website ECFMG.org

hi,
i've just done my mbbs from india. i want to pursue neurology. what would be the best course of action for me now? is it possible to go for further studies in the US after doing MD Medicine here in india? do institutes there accept our qualification or do we have to compulsorily do residency there to qualify for a fellowship?

Usually resident's salary is enuf to maintain a decent lifestyle. Unless u r too extravagant, u can make a good living on it and even save something.

If u ask me.. BEST is to take USMLE n take up residency in US in case u wanna practice abroad. If u r sure on practisinig in India.. MD(medi) followed by DM neuro here.

Yes.. u dnt need to do residency to get a fellowship but mind u fellowships r not easier to come by.

I can't comment on ur situation cos i've not come across many in similar one. But since u wud be studying for ur MBBS too, i guess it might take u about a 7-9 months to prepare.
Find out more from people who've taken step1 at ur stage.

First Aid (FA) is a collection of super high yield material for MLE. MUST READ.
5-7 months is d commonly suggested period for step1. Apply 4-5 months in advance.

ASH B USMLE DOC PLZ HELP...I'M DOING MY PG AND CURRENTLY IN MY 3rd YEAR, which would get over by june 2007.i wanted to know whether its a good idea to give STEP 2 CS before other steps during my PG. coz i've my university exams in may 2007 and cant give enough time for the other steps. after my PG tenure from june 2007 i'll will be left with very little time to study for all the steps and get their results in time for 2008 match.also the chances of getting a visa post PG would be less(? i suppose).ARE THE CHANCES OF VISA REJECTION HIGH IF U APPLY FOR STEP 2 CS WITHOUT HAVING GIVEN THE OTHER STEPS? [THE OTHER SIDE IS THAT IF I APPLY NOW I WOULD GET A LETTER FROM MY DEAN THAT I'M ATTACHED TO THIS HOSPITAL UNDER A BOND TILL JUNE 2007 WHEN I GO FOR THE INTERVIEW]which one would be a better option amongst these 2.pls help

We need MLE or not depends on d hospital offering observership n hence varies.

Yes there r always high chance of visa rejection if we directly apply for Step 2 CS. If u can take at least 1 step b4 applying for CS visa, it myt help quite a lot.
I think chances of getting a Visa post-PG isn't any different from that for fresh graduates.
Any sort of bond will help to prove ur non-immigrant intentions.

Yes they can unless they spend lavishly. It also depends on the place of ur residence. Certain cities like NY r costlier than average.

I feel, in ur situation getting a residency if definitely tougher. U gotta get as many factors right as u can. U can do d following to increase ur chances:
1. scores in high 90s
2. Some research publications
3. get some decent USCE
4. Use some contacts (will always work )
But still, it'll be tougher given d increasing competition for MLE.

I think practically yes. Though u can specifically request ECFMG for a paper application. But y wud some1 take so much pain when IWA is so simple!

thanx ashB for helping me out seems there's not much info about USCE but wil search for more.one more query i am planing for 2008 match and have jst startd my preparation for step 1 i knw i am late as already gave gre(as previously thought to take tht route) and i am doing my internship(and its realy heavy out here)so it wont be posible for me to take step1 befre april and then step2 around august and then applications in sept(i thnk step2 cs is not req for appl right) then in oct cs does this plan sounds ok if anythng is not in place plz say.thnx

If u r a graduate:
Form 186, 187, 344, 345
Copy of ur Degree (NOT povisional one)
One passport photo
A copy of medical transcripts (Not essential but i sent it cos i had it with me)
If u r an UG/intern:
Form 183, 187, 344, 345
Dean's letter stating the date when u'll receive ur degree
One passport photo
Please refer the thread 'steps for applying for step1" also for more info. N do read d information booklet carefully cos any of us maybe wrong or make a mistake.

Well, we can't do anything about the intern thing. But it'd be better if u wud try to complete step 2CS earlier to get more interview calls. Try to set the targets a bit earlier, say squeeze out a few weeks. U can always postpone a bit in case u find ur preps wanting.

Anyway my query is different frm the rest of the pack.... well my name is Md. Sajid Rizwan in my medical degree ( the diploma) and the rest of all my certificates till date.But in my PASSPORT the name is mentioned as Mohammad Sajid Rizwan.......
I am confused about what name to use as my real name in the ECFMG.....
I have been told by my freinds that the orange card mentions we need a passport as a proof of identification.
though its just a matter of abbreviation and full form of the name.... its a matter of sleepless nights fr me......
its really a GRAVE matter fr me........ and i dont want to goof this up.....
please help ASH......

Thanks a ton for ur blessings. I'd like to say 2 things:
1. Always prefer the name that is on ur medical diploma
2. BEST thing is to call up ECFMG helpline and state ur problem. They'll tell u d most correct course of action. And then do exactly as they say.
U can find their numbers on ECFMG website.
