best combination of theory and practical books for medicine
hi everyone..

medicine is the most difficult thing to handle...
it isnt only about the endless signs and symptoms etc etc,, a great contributer is the confusion created by the numerous books and endless advices by seniors abt which ones to follow..

one can buy the whole stock of books available (as everyone boasts of a few better things over the others) and display them just to dust them every week...!!!,, but the point still remains which ones to follow.. and wat all will be REALLY FRUITFUL in the longer run...

so pls advice on which are the books we shud rely on keeping in mind both theory as well as pg exams

thanks!!

Anyone heard of the clinical examintion textbook by Talley and O Conor. Forgot bout the exact name of the textbook book but used it and got a lot out of it. aslo Hutchinson's clinical methods

Kumar and Clark is good for theory. But if you have Cecil's or Harrison's then good.

devajyoti

FOR THEORY: A COMBINATION OF DAVIDSON WITH GEORGE MATHEW IS WHAT I BELIEVE IS BEAT FOR COLLEGE EXAMS.......

DO RETRO FROM HARRISON OR REFER TO IT WHEN SOMETHING IS NOT CLEAR FROM THE ABOVE 2 BOOKS............

NEUROLOGY IN KUMAR N CLARK IS REALLY GOOD...SO REFER.....

DEVELOP THE HABIT OF REFERING BOOKS FOR A VAST TOPIC SUCH AS MEDICINE....

FOR PRACTS...I FOUND CLINICAL METHODS BY SHASTRY TO BE VERY VERY GOOD......FOR EXAMINATION PART REFER TO MC CLEOD

punjabi_guy11
Aim USMLE Step 1

start with reading important topics from harrison in fianal part 1.............
whenyou actually start ur final year that isfinal part 2 go in with davidson while giving tests refer to george matthews.... that helps a lot in exam specially when time is less so if u have read it during tests that gives u a big plus during exams.......
as far as practicals are concerned in my view u cant read hutchinson may be many people will raise their brows on this but i think that way.... algappan is a very good book as it touches theory part to along with clinicals so lot of ADVANTAGE in our batch only those who studied algappan scored more over than any other who studied some other book..............
lastly always remember that u
"SHOULD KNOW THEORY THAN ONLY YOUR CLINICALS WILL BE STRONG AS YOUR EYES SEE WHAT YOUR MIND KNOWS"

devajyoti

algoppan?
whats this "algoppan" icon_question.gif
can u give some details about this book and the reasons why u call it a good book...

Aim USMLE Step 1

algappan as already told is a book by dr.algappan its a very good book covers theory along with clinical i think its best alternative to hutchinson in final mbbs as u have 72 days of duty and this book helps u a lot and this is the way................

For practicals i would suggest that for the initial part of the year reading Golwala is a good idea for detailed examination and methodology.Kundu is great for symptomatology and specific exam cases.
pj mehta is great for pre exam skimming when there is no time for Golwala.

Aim NEET PG

Hi folks...me just entered final year, senior docs say that Davidson is good for theory and macleods for oracts but cns is good in hutchison....well didnt know abt George Matthew...thanks for info...will have a look...definitely...i heard Kundu is good for practs too..keep this link updated anyways icon_lol.gif icon_lol.gif

pinochhiofat

go for pj mehta and kundu for pracs
davidson is good for theory

Aim NEET PG

combination of harrison and kumar and clark is THE best for theory.
for practicals -during posting golwala
for general reading pj(respiratory system, git ,general) and alagappan(cvs and cns).
and in exam times only kundu and cassette clinics by ghanshyam vaidya.
all this is a good combination.

rahulbuddy

hi,
davidson(sort out main topics ) & API for theory &
gollwala & kundu--- should do i think ?.?.

Aim PLAB Part 2

Davidson for theory & alagappan & kundu for practicals..

drjerry

There are several ways to look at it.....

if u want to start prep for a pg exam then harrison is the choice

But davidson is THE BEST BOOK for final exams and it really helps u to sort out your basics.

API is good too....esp for CNS

For clinical, golwalla is best for techniques of examination and related

Alagappan is good too but it does not cover techniques too well...

Kundu and PJ are easy to read but beware, an examiner who can make out that uv read them can butcher you in the vivas!

Aim FRCOphth

Read Harrison + CMDT for theory my senior told tht

for clinics first complete hutchinson thoroughly for at least 5 times .....then go for kundu

-morpheus-
Aim DM Gastroenterology

Aim Indian PG Exams

Hutchison is v.good book

dr_pradeep2005
Aim MCh

I think no medical student should omit Hutchison. read and absorb it to be a good doctor. But i think the text is not enough for senior students, they should supplement it with Kundu/PJ Mehta or any other Indian author's clinical med book. Alagappan is a reference book, desirable but not essential to read. Its too voluminous for an undergraduate.
As far as text is concerned, i think George Matthew's new edition (3rd) is a really good book. Its based on Harrison's, so i try to combine both of these, though GM is enough on its own for the exams. I feel that Davidson is too concise. Those who have not read any medicine or find it tough should read Davidson or Kumar & Clark. Anyways for the entrances, Harrison is must, it helps you revise many other subjects as well. Only catch is that its time consuming & needs a lot of concentration to read. You mus read fast 7 highlight only the most important points from which MCQs can be framed.
