I'm asking you.....
I read at other places the disasvatages of going after pg. so then why are so many going after pg??

are you refering to the amount of time one would waste in doing residency again???
I would really like to know are ppl getting exhausted or is it some other things...
which goes thru a lot of ppl's minds but dont really like to mention as reasons..
like getting desperate etc etc

ok
the ppl who take usmle after doin pg from here........most of them either think tht life as a whole would be better if they get a resi. in US.
or tht their career would be better off tht way.
or tht even after gettin a pg here, they hate the daily grind tht each of us has to go through & the amount of time & effort it takes to make it work as a doctor in india.
or the work culture(or lack of it) as a doctor in india.

everyone has their own reasons.

ur best off charting ur own course, without being too biased or judgemental either way.

good luck

please help
Ash B, that was a great deal of work. And it was inspiring too. Thanks icon_biggrin.gif
But what ive heard is different.Life is bad as an intern in US.Bcoz all u get it 3000 or so in $ as pay and with that, u will b forced to do second jobs as in Mc Donalds nd so.Most of the internees are on debts nd even after completion of the residency if u work there, most of the money we get goes as taxes to the govt. nd the rest what we have will b equal to what we got in residency. If interested i can provide u the link where i read it.Please let me know what u think about it. Whether my piece of information is correct or not.I was really disappointed on hearing that.

Sorry guys was a bit busy and couldn't attend to my own thread!

nandini123 wrote:
Should I join the web preparation or is there any link to get latest notes. How long should an average student prepare to get a pecentile above 90.

There is no link to get d latest notes, plus getting these notes from anywhere else other than Kaplan is illegal. So ask out ur friend or batchmate who myt have d latest notes.

nandini123 wrote:

As u wrote If u r hellbent for surgical sciences reconsider. My query is Is One has done MS (Gen Surgery) and has a multiple entry visa the to do a fellowship there do we need mle score. A senior told me to do fellowship u need mle score as well. is that true

Yes surgical sciences were very difficult to get but past couple of years situation is changing and as one of my seniors at Mayo clinic put it, they r now 'within reach'.

Still getting surgery is tuf, needs good scores and other favourable factors too. Even when u get surgery, its rare to get to d good universities, leave alone top ones. So its like deciding between Psychiatry/Pathology at AIIMS and Orthopaedics/RD (preferences vary icon_smile.gif) from a small place.

hi ashb!!!
i came across this thread today. wa surprised to see so many people facing the same dilema. Thanks for discussing the various aspects and laying out all the facts so beautifully. i have got a decent rank in all india. and i have even given stepi with a good score. so how would i stand if i finished my pg in india and then got into a residency in the us??.

Thanks cookiemonster for encouragement. icon_smile.gif N congrats to u for handling both AIPG n MLE scucessfully. Cool yaar!!!

D question u have asked is VERY VERY tricky n subjective. I'd say, it all depends YOUR OWN priorities. Decide how badly u want to be in US. What is that matters to u most.. time/money/family/working conditions/branch etc. Then weigh them individually b4 coming to a decision.

Well i took d smaller path cos doing PG in india is a waste of time if one is fully committed to doing residency in US. People do it to be on d safer side, so that if visa is refused or some other mishap prevents u from getting a residency or staying in US after residency, u still can work easily in India.

Now lemme tell u, contrary to popular notion, PG in US is recognised by MCI. See d following link:
Only RxPG members can see links here! Register or Login!

Yes govt does not offer jobs to US PGs but private sector is still open.

The visa issue is d only part where noone can be sure but to take or not to take that risk is a matter of how badly u wanna go to US. Ryt now visa situation is very good. In fact 2de itself my fren got a 6 month visa just after a 2 min. interview.

All in all, i'd say if u have enough patience and energy to pursue residency after PG, its not that bad either, specially if u want to return to India. But if not, the target is not too far away. Quickly give step 2, get CS visa and join residency in US in 07.

Good luck 2 u..

Well y r so many people going after PG??? I'll tell u a few reasons:
1. As i already said, to be on d safer side
2. Many times, during PG they realise that it was not what they had dreamt of. They wanted to go to better places like US and so they rectify their mistake.
3. Most commonly, during PG they face d hard realities of medical practice in India. D working conditions, d frustration, lack of opportunities forces them to take alternative path. U won't believe how many people i've come across who r giving MLE post-PG just cos they were frustrated of medical system in india. Every time i come across seniors who r doing PG, they remind me that i've taken d best step in going for MLE and they wish they could've done that.

Thanks nrp and Adeity for ur kind words.

arihant_d wrote:

Well said arihant!

Now regarding fellowship issues:
1. Fellowship does not require USMLE
2. Getting a fellowship is 20 times tougher than getting a residency via MLE (as arihant already put it)
3. In most of d branches u can't practice in US after fellowship, u need a residency to do that.
4. Usually the aim is to get in touch with the latest techniques and methods in a particular subject. For eg. when it were early days in joint replacement, indian docs used to go for fellowships to US to learn the technique and likewise.
5. At times its just d unfulfilled ambition to go to US that drives people to go for fellowships.
6. Strong research and contacts r needed to get fellowships.

Yes U will definitely be eligible for 2007 match even if u take CS by 31st Dec, 06. But i'd suggest u do not postpone it from mid Oct cos that would give u a chance to get a pre-match offer.

Well i guess u missed that info in the article. Still i'll tell u..

Step 3 is tests our skills in the management of patients. U need to clear Step3 to acquire a practising license in US. Some states need u to do at least a year of residency to appear for Step 3 while some allow us even after we clear Step 2CS.

Another indirect advantage of clearing Step 3, for IMGs is that u become eligible to get an H1 visa, in case ur program offers u one.

Hope it helps.. icon_smile.gif

No PSU i'm not irritated at all. I understand these things r too complicated to understand in one go. But i have a suggestion. Take some time n read thru the general topics in USMLE forums and i assure u none of ur queries will remain unanswered.

Regarding ur question, Yes u can go and join residency with out Step3 cos it is in no way required by any residency programs. It is only reqd if u seek H1 visa from ur program. Without clearing Step3 u can only go on J1 visa, which, infact is the commonest visa given to IMGs.

hi!
hi! i am aditya soral
first of all let me congratulate all of you for such wonderful, informative posts
i have cleared the all india 2006 exam(the future of which is.......?)
i have also cleared my state entrance(rajasthan) and am planning to pursue ms gen.surg.
the reason i deviated from my earlier plan to take mle was that somebody told me......if i do residency(surgery) in my country of origin it wud be easier for me to get a surgical residency in the US......please tell me IS IT TRUE?

the other confusion i had was regarding:what exactly are 1.pre-match 2.post match?

and finally(i don't know, maybe a rumour) there is a lot of discussion going on that getting a visa after 2007 wud be difficult......anything on this?

thanks a lot guys.....

Hey aditya, how're u doing man!!! Surprised??? Well, don't be cos u know me very well.. icon_smile.gif icon_wink.gif And d answer to ur question is.. Yes it does help if u have work experience in surgery (cos our PG counts as work experience there). but d question that crops up is.. Is the advantage worth the 3 years we put in Indian PG. Thats sumthing subjective cos different people have different opinions. Plus d fact that earlier getting surgery in US was tougher than it is now. In d words of my senior who r doing surgery residency in US is "Surgery has now come WITHIN REACH of IMGs"

Pre-match means the offer of a residency position given by a program before actual match process. If u accept it, u don't sit in d match and join that program.

Post-match scramble, as it is known, is d 48 hour period right after d declaration of match results, where d unmatched candidates make a fray for d unfilled residency positions.

Well this visa news seems to be a rumour cos right now d visa situation seems 2 be improving. But if i had to rephrase it, i'd say getting a residency at US is becoming tougher by every passing year due to substantial increase in d no of IMGs taking MLE. Thats sumthing that worries all of us a bit. But i'm sure you'll make it anytime u choose.

Hope this helps.. icon_smile.gif

Can se sent with step 1 or Step 2 application or even later than that but before u apply for ECFMG certification

Its better to send it as soon as possible cos its verification takes sum time. Plus if any problem occurs we shud have some time in hand to solve that. Otherwise our certification might be delayed.

Hi agrawal! icon_smile.gif Congrats on ur selection to MHCET.

The point u have asked is a very good one. I'm not sure what exactly u wanted to ask. But i'd rather say, it needs to be addressed individually cos lots of things have to be considered b4 taking a stand. Most importantly decide ur target first. Ortho and paeds are very different modalities specially if u plan for US. Plus u ultimately want to practice in India or US. Actually if u ask me, the easiest and simplest way is to do a residency in US followed by fellowship.

Because no matter what, fellowships are definitely tougher to get than residency slots. Those who think otherwise r poorly informed. In most cases, u got to do residency all over again, specially if u want a practising licence in d US. U need quite a few research papers and contacts to get fellowships easily.

But if ur prime aim is to practice in India, then u could try for fellowships after ur PG. In case u r unsuccessful, Indian superspeciality branches are not bad either.

Yes, getting a fellowship in US is pretty difficult specially in surgical branches. A paeds fellowship will be relatively easier. U gotta concentrate on research throughout ur PG if u want to make fellowship possible. The more d number of publications, the better will be d chances.
