Dear All

I am a new user at this site.please advice me on the following points

1: - Whether i can join residency in us in june 2007.

No, it is impossible cos u won't get a date fo step 2 CS now.

Quote:
3: - After how much time will I get my result.

Usually 4 weeks, but i guess there is a delay these days so maybe 6 weeks after u have taken ur exam.

1. For starting residency in 2007, its necessary to have ecgmg certification (need step1,2,cs scores)by 1st september 2006 or atleast score of one of the steps to fetch interviews

icon_eek.gif One correction.. I guess we have to be ECFMG certified before joining residency. To be eligible for match we have to take Step 2 CS by about 31st Dec so that its scores r available by 20th Feb, which is d deadline for submitting all scores upto step 2 CS for match.

ECFMG certification process takes some time even after CS results on or before 20th feb but that doesn't make us ineligible for that match.

If u r sure of dec 2nd half, take Dec-Jan-Feb slot, last date for which is October 31st. U can easily complete ur application b4 that. If ur application reaches later than d last date for THAT slot, u are assigned next possible slot autmatically.

But i'd suggest do it AS SOON AS possible cos these days getting dates at prometric centres is highly difficult. ECFMG myt award u d slot but it myt not be possible to get a date at ur desired centre. So hurry up.

P.S.: @ b_coli: I understand ur concern and urgency, but please refrain from posting same thing 10 times and with inappropriate titles lest u invite wrath of RxPG team.. If its so important just take some pain and go thru d forums. If u'd had done that all the answers were already given, even in this same thread itself.

LOL.. Thats a great idea. icon_biggrin.gif Do tell me if u stumble across a nice match for me too.. icon_wink.gif icon_redface.gif

On a serious note, we can do RAships or take transitional year positions in medicine or surgery in US. Or come back to India and build up a research CV by working on some projects.

Preps is ok but slow.. But m hoping to better it.. icon_smile.gif Thanks for asking! What step r u taking?

Sorry for late reply.. Very busy these days.

1. Procure all d material
2. Start studying IMMEDIATELY.
3. Register for step 1 immediately
4. U can take ur Step 1 exam earliest by April i guess cos of availability of dates etc after u complete ur application. N if u work hard u can prepare by then too.
5. Step2Ck after about 12 weeks, CS within 1 month makes u ready for 2008 match in time. icon_smile.gif

Vary schedule based on ur level of preps, dnt compromise ur scores in a hurry.

Good luck! icon_smile.gif

I don't have any factual info but i have heard of such docs earning average 2-7 lakhs on percentage basis. But most were either surgeons or superspecialists. It varies greatly with ur branch, parent institute, publications n post residency experience.

Its a big n complicated question, see related discussions in forums for various views. But in general cons are more time consuming, decreased opportunities (cos undoubtedly 'most' programs prefer Recent medical Graduates). Post-PG average scores are also said to be lesser than fresh grads.

it will, though not in a big way. But it does add to ur CV and also can fetch u LORs from ur medico profs at the US university, which will be valuable.

i just want to ask a person with a green card holder like me will have to give toefl examination or not for admission in mph? what are the other things required for persons like me for admissions in mph.

how about doing mph and side by side preparing for the usmle because getting residency is no guaraneeas everyone says ? because i will be done with all the steps by may.

Thank you Ash B. I forgot to add in the last mail that while doing the MPH, i worked as a research assistant and published 2 papers in journals. But the papers were related to health care administration and were not directly linked with frontline medical research. Do you think that those health care administration papers will help in my cause of securing a residency position. Thanks in advance.

I think, it'll still help, tho indirectly cos its not direct front line medical research. By what i've gathered, if u'll be able to defend ur change of track convincingly, u could make it more effective.

Query To AshB
Hi AshB
I am reading your posts past few months. You are really impressive, experienced joe. Please answer my one query.I have made my mind that i am gonna prepare for MLE.I am currently in final year of MBBS.
My query is:-My batchmates who made their mind in first year regarding MLE have done various sorts of research (ICMR etc.),conferences,seminars.I have come to know that these stuffs carry some value during interviews. The thing that is haunting me is that i have not done any sort of research work till date.Even i may not be able to do it in my final year. What is your opinion?Should i take up a research or research carries little value?I can do research but for that i will have to work Harder..

The number of MLE and GRE takers are increasing by leaps and bounds. So after MLE scores deciding factor could be Research.
Waiting for a prompt and beneficial reply.

Warm Regards

well ashB, does 4 years after graduation mean you have less chances of getting into a residency...? even if your scores are 90 plus in all steps...? Even if you have been finished residency in those 4 years in that specialty you want to get into...? won't it be counted as work experience at least...?

hi.... icon_smile.gif i had earlier planned to take step1, but fell into aipgee prepn, dueto various reasons though my aim was to do mle.

i need to knw if its possible/difficult to get internal medicine after 4 years of finishing mbbs. wud the 3 yrs of pg here be considered as clinical experience..
will the time gap of 4 yrs be a disadvantage to get into good programs...?

i ve planned to start my prepn from march n take step1 in oct.

fragile_x
Aim USMLE Jobs

okie,here's the deal.
some programs like to have candidates who have already done MD in their home countires.
But others prefer recent graduates.
So, overall, its evens out and ur chances would be comparable to a recent grad in my opinion.
That is, depending upon how tough things become in another 4 yrs.

See jaydoc, as fragile_x has already told u, there's no fixed funda that works for USMLE. There r programs that want Recent graduates only while there r others that prefer some1 with proper experience as in MD.

As far as ur case is concerned, don't look at d programs of the former type, concentrate on d latter. General rules for all USMLE takers wud apply to u too. Good scores, publications, presentations, USCE, LORs.. get everything u can. MD in d same branch as u r applying is good. Lots of people now go for US after their PG so remind urself that if they can y can't YOU!

Good luck 2 u.. icon_smile.gif

If u can get a good percentile n sumhow explain d gap of 4 years at d interviews or show some work experience (medical) during that period, u can have a decent chance..

See this recent discussion also for points related to gap in MLE n graduation..

If u hurry u could make it to 2008 match assuming u r well prepared for AIPGE. There is not doubt USA situation is becoming more competitive than it is already.. Don't think it'll ever become UK but more people will have to take >1 attempt to get a residency in d coming years.

Suppose we don't get a residency in our first attempt. Does that decrease our chances during next match, say they give us points for being more experienced at teh match! icon_wink.gif or is it considered a black spot on our CV?

LOL.. No the match experience doesn't count but if you gather some USCE or US research experience during that period, that'll certainly add to your CV.

If you don't have a choice out of PG entrance, then why are you considering USMLE? icon_eek.gif

If i were you and USMLE is really what i wanted to do, 2 years won't matter too much. But then these are individual decisions and tough decisions require a lot of resilience. More than the time its the great stress that comes with MLE, that should be your consideration too.

saira
