FAQ: HOW TO READ HARRISON?

Hollo Guys,
i have a problem in reading Harrison. A no. of our seniors said that if u r preparing for ALL INDIA or any other state exam then u shud read harrison at least twice.
Now the problem with me is that i never read harr. before in UG.
From now 6 months left for ALL INDIA. therefore it is not possible to cover harr. antegrade.
can anyone tell me how to read harrison in situation like this. i have given 40 days from now to read this great book.
Shud i do selected topics?
Shud i go retrograde?
Shud i do it with the help of Zulfi/Raj.

PLEASE guide me, i m in great confusion icon_cry.gif icon_cry.gif icon_cry.gif icon_cry.gif icon_cry.gif

Excuse me...
Nadu,

I apologize for being rather curt at what I'm about to say. "I've been dishing out my advice on Harrison almost daily for about a week now. Go look it up!".

And I mean no offence. Just look up my posts elsewhere.

Am I already becoming lazier? It's not even 48 hours since I donned the Garfield icon!

Cheers with Purring

Dr. Kay

Help offered
Nadu,

It's in bits and pieces. What you can do best is to find the posts that I've been typing in for the last few days. You can find what I've been doing by clicking "View all posts by this member" under my name on the sides of my posts.

Okay?

Cheers

hey nadu.... wassup.. what happened man look in great confusion.. hey if u wnat my advice i would say that "JUST READING HARRISONS ONCE OR TWICE WONT MATTER AT ALL UNTIL U HAVE THE CAPABILITY TO REMEBER WHAT U HAVE READ..." what i mean to say is if u go prospectively reading harrisons now u wont get much time to revise it ...had u been reading it in your undergraduate days then it would have bee a different story altoghether.. then u just have to flip over the pages ... but now is the time to do mcqs... we have to balance our time between reading texts and solving mcqs. u know why do we write things in rough after we cram something??? why do we take mock exams ??? why do we just stick on some table on our walls ??? its all because we are human beings and we tend to forget.... but LISTEN!!! dont lose heart here .... wehn we solve mcqs we refer retrospectively.....and we take around 5 min atleast to search that topic from these great books... isnt it ... this helps in 2 ways .
1. if we get the answer we can get confident about it and may be we can get to know many other thigs about the same topic
2. we tend to analyse the other three options also ...and may learn something about them even ...
3.and last but not the least.. even if we are not able to find a reasonanble aswer but atleast that answer gets registered in our brains within those 5 min of searching... i bet..u will re,eber more mcqs like this than just looking at the question and cramming the answer... trust me ... mail me if u differ in my suggestions .....

hi
I understand that u cannot cover the entire harrison in few days especially if u have not read it before in ug days.

I therefore advise you to read selected topics
Please make sure that u also go through the questions of the topic u read side by side. This will save your time.

Another option that u have is that u read first 350 pages of harrison and tread Davidson thoroughly. This will help you in getting good results with less efforts.

Aim Maharashtra PG

this was the sequence i used to study when i was preparing for UGs
-start with general medicine and read out the finer details.these are the topics we don't even see and many questions come from them
-read symptomatolgy of all the systems.symptomatolgy will make u think and correlate.if u're good here then 50% of ur work is already done.
-start with CVS-->Hematology-->Pulmonology-->Gastroenterology-->Endocrinology-->skin-->Renal medicine-->Neurology-->Psychiatry.
-keep the volatile subjects in the end.
-harrisson has discussed everything in detail except Tropical medicine which is not as deep as it should be.its an american book and though they have put light over global medicine they're bound to bias with the diseases more prevalent in the Americas than the rest of the world.so along with harrisson ur best companion would be hutchinson, prep manual, handbook to continuously revise the tpoics that are bound to be forgotten and PSM textbook Park.
-along with harrisson one should read Davidson and API as these books are not only concoctions from Harrisson but also make the understanding of the subject clearer.
i think that would be enough about how to start.
ciao.
enjoy medicine with harrisson.

Thats a good schedule
Thanks thats a good work up and schedule.I think even better would be to read such books with interest rather than retrograde as new topics are being asked.Although this is time consuming one has to try it out.For remembering the facts one has to keep on trying out mneumonics.

thanks.
its time consuming but it works.couldn't do mnemonics coz they seem to be very confusing atleast while solving mcqs.
retrograde studying is impossible for me.

15TH OR 16TH EDITION
Well the 16th Edition is a revolution it makes harrison atleast 50 times more readable than the previous edition. The look it self says a lot about the new edition you should go check it out especially when you are just finishing 2nd year.

The matter however may be more or less the same in both the books from a undergraduate point of view.. I would say if you can afford it buy it.. or else read from the old edition...

Other books for sugery for details see other forums.. to name some there are Das A Concise text book of surgery, SRB Manual of surgery.

I guess a lot of text in Harrisons needs to be read. Definitely the Tables are very very important. And i guess Pathophysiology is Best in Harrison's. hey...
as far as harrison is concerned...

must start readin it well b4 the final sem...it helps alot..
like start reading imp.topics from CadioVasc Sys n Resp Sys in the 6th and 7th sem....atleast...i'e. 3rd yr...n during clinics, if u come across some interestin n common case-go thru harrison for that particular topic...
in the final yr--can easily read CNS, GastoIntestinal n even Hepat....
u can note down some imp.points in ur text book(the one other than harrison-like davidson,API or watever)-this helps durin vivas n exms...

remainin other topics of harri can be covered durin internship n while preparin for PGentrnces...with a revision of these major systems...

i hope this 'll help ppl out here...

as far as earning is concerned you
can ask any medicine doc n
pediatrics doc, you can easily find
the difference, and this difference is
also in big corporate hospital to
small setup, i can remember the
cheque amount of my peds
consultant and those from medicine
dept, idifference was almost 2- 4
times always.....pediatrics is low
paying branch as compared to
medicine, as i can remember one of
the oldest peditrician from
gangaram once said that pediatric is
dying branch, as higher society have
high rate of vaccination n good
hygiene ,so less disease, most of the
patients who need admission are
from poor family,except in
neonatalogy, while in medicine in
poor class they have infectious
disease n in high class they have
hypertension/ DM/Renal disease/
cardiac problem etc etc

don't touch Harrison throughout ur preparation.. read mudit khanna and recent questions at least 5 times.. its enough.. other than these u may get 1 or 2 new questions.. don't waste ur whole preparation time for these 1 or 2 questions.. follow this strictly, u will get pg within a year..

drprabhatsinha18

If you are a fast reader then you can go with Harrison, otherwise better to go with other medicines books.
