Ur degrees need to be verified from ur parent college after u apply.

3-4 months prior to the slot is good time to start the application process.

Yes exams r held throughout d year except first 15 days of Jan and local holidays.

P.S. Please go thru hot topics of this forum and ecfmg.org for these preliminary queries and post additional queries in d forums.

New Zealand is one country that recognizes USMLE steps and offers some waivers in its NZREX exam if u have cleared some of MLE steps.

I think even australia recognizes it to some extent but i'm not sure about it.

Hi docpearl & speedo.. welcome to rxpg and MLE forums.

Its better to focus on ur basic MBBS books. Try to build strong concepts rather that just cramming facts. Get urself clinically oreinted and even read theory in that light.

If u can find time, i feel reading kaplan will definitely orient u in MLE direction and wud be good for ur MLE preps. BUT REMEMBER, read kaplan only after u have grasped ur concepts from ur basic books.

i need advise.
hi.
i'm a doctor from india.
i graduated in 1997. i'd initially planned to specialise in Anaesthesia but a situation led me to get into general surgery.
soon i realised i was not meant to be in surgery. but i couldn't get into Anaesthesia in india.
i came to uk to look for Anaesthesia programme. having specialised in surgery i couldn't get onto a programme in Anaesthesia inspite of my best efforts.
i've been sincere and achieved whatever needed achieving in the relevant field- MS in general surgery from india and MRCS in the UK.
currently, i'm on general practice training programme in the UK. though life seems stable for me in UK, i still feel i should be doing Anaesthesia .
i am planning to take USMLE now and if i succeed i intend to take Anaesthesia .
considering the fact that i've completed mbbs in 1997, have not statretd my mle prep and looking for Anaesthesia residency with a surgical background what would the members of this forum advise me?
thanks

how does one IMG do post-doc fellowship in the USA?

pass_usmle

hello!
I want to make one thing clear in the very beginning. The USMLE exam is very different from the MBBS exams. The pattern, syllabus, questions asked do not match at all. So if you didnt score well in your MBBS 1 and 2 then this wont mean that you cant score well in the USMLE. Although you may face some difficulties in your MLE preps. And then university scores dont mean anything when you apply for the residency. Good scores in the USMLE step1 and step2CK are the key here.
U ask if there is a chance if you work hard now...wow what a naive question....Of course there is every chance...and all chances are reserved only for hard working people. So I suggest that you prepare well for the MBBS III yr exam now and once you get through just put some time aside to prepare for the USMLE. I would strongly suggest that you get hold of Kaplan USMLE lecture notes and begin with them. They are concise and pretty high yield.
When to take Step1...although you are eligible to take it after 2 years of medical school education everyone strongly advises against it. that is because after 2 yrs you still havent finished your basic science subjects in India. Then secondly step1 questions have become clinically oriented with clinical vignettes in almost every question. You will be in a better position to tackle these questions once you have some basic idea of clinical subjects. I will say that your plan is good. Start preparing now and apply for the exam when you are in your internship. 2-3 months of final revision is enough for the exam and then take the exam in your internship itself. Once you have your scores apply for the Step 2CK and take it preferable within 6 months.
This is it for now. Feel free to ask any further questions.
Bye....and happy reading.

Hi ady1, since u r very senior to us and u r already in UK, u must have seen a lot more. I don't even consider myself qualified to 'advise' such an experienced person.. icon_smile.gif but yes i'd state my view.

In general 6-7 years post-PG (since u have not yet taken MLE) its tougher to get a residency then immediately after MBBS. If u have some good publications it might be better for u to get a fellowship.

I don't have specific info pertaining to ur case but i wud suggest a course of action. To get the best info, go to a few anaesthesia program's website and e-mail their program co-ordinators n directors stating ur condition n attach ur complete CV. They are d most reliable sources to know d ground reality in ur case. These people respond nicely n might enlighten u on yet unseen aspects. They might also advise u about the possiblity of fellowships at their universities.

Good luck! icon_smile.gif

I have done M.D. in medicine in 2004, and currently I am working in a Pharma industry since about six months. So can you please tell me about my prospects of getting residency if I clear usmle with 85+.

I mean 2 years post graduation is ok ?

As I will require another year for the preparation, so please let me know about my chances of getting residency with this background

Many thanks in advance

Hi chintik! going by the trends of USMLE i would say 85+ is not d score u shud expect to get residency with these days. Its getting really tough with each passing year. In general fresh graduates r preferred in US. U will have lesser chances of getting residency than recent grads. But its not that bad if u can get scores in high 90s n show up some publications on ur CV.

But u have a simpler option of fellowship, specially if u have 2-3 publications at least and/or can find some contact to jack up ur application.

sherly wrote:

Quite vague question, but still as u r inclined towards surgical specialities, least expected would be 95.

In the past, people have gotten into average programs of specialities like psychiatry, paeds, FP with scores around 85+ but it doesn't seem to hold good anymore with no of applicants soaring high. Simple.. why would they settle for a 85 when they have many candidates in 90s.

@ Sherly and Chintik: Scores is d only thing we IMGs have and so Aim for the best score, that is 99. No doubts about that, specially if u contemplating a surgical residency settle for nuthing less than high 90s. People with anything below 90 r finding it too tough to get interview calls this year n i suppose next year will be worse.

In USMLE, scores constitute only half d story. The other half is quite complicated and difficult and It includes:
1. USCE
2. Publications
3. US LORs
4. Research Experience
5. Visa Status
6. Contacts
7. Timing of application
8. No of scores in hand at d time of application
9. Choice of speciality
10. Choice of programs that u apply for
11. Other things like MPH etc
12. Interview itself can turn tables
13. Finally how u make ur ROL(Rank Order List) during match
..... n many more.. icon_biggrin.gif
I don't mean to scare u, but just wanted to tell all here that we gotta need to pull lots of strings to get things right in US.

No specific requirement. Just clear ur MLE steps and apply to the program that offers such a program as u wud to an IM/Paeds program, if they select u, u can start such a combo residency.

IMG=International Medical Graduate, any person who has done his medical graduation outside the US.

Step1>Step2CK>Step2CS>ECFMG certification

Then apply to any branch n university u wish, u'll be interviewied at the ones who shortlist u. Then based on that u'll get a residency thru National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) or Match. Read hot topics in forums for more info.

Copy of ur Degree (NOT povisional one)
One passport photo
A copy of medical transcripts (Not essential but i sent it cos i had it with me)

If u r an UG/intern:
Form 183, 187, 344, 345
Dean's letter stating the date when u'll receive ur degree
One passport photo

U now get a letter from ur dean stating the date u'l receive ur degree. Usually the college office people are aware of d language etc needed in such cases, so u won't have much of a problem.

Don't forget to write ur ECFMG/USMLE id no on each document and photo.

See jaissy, i'm not aware how many days of preps u've already put in. I'll advise under d assumption that u've started recently.

See Ideally we shud have all our scores ready before early september upto Step3. Nothing would beat that, n that'll give u d best results.

The minimal with which we can participate in 2008 match is if we take our step2CS b4 31st dec, 2007.

Now some1 in a situation like u can get somewhere in between these two. U can take d steps roughly in d following fashion:
1. Step1 - Around Feb-March
2. Step2CK - early July
3. Step2CS - Late aug
4. Step3- october or nov (so as to have ur step3 scores with u during ur interviews.)

Though there'll be lot of road blocks like visa etc. U'll have to plan meticulously in advance specially the Step2CS, visa interview, n step3 part.

Yes, step3 is optional, if u r not hell bent on H1B. Plus step3 scores r not taken into consideration by all programs. But if u have scored well in it too, its definitely a plus point n even serves to mask any previous under-performances.

Thats my 2 cents.. icon_smile.gif

Congrats on passing the exam. 82 is an ok score. Residency??? well its too premature to comment on that. First pass step2 and then you will have to compare the scores and speculate. depends on what you r looking forward to....u may not get the top ones viz dermat,surg...but who knows as the score alone is not the deciding factor.
Do a bit of more hard work for the step2 and I hope you may stand in a better position. Keep up the hard work....

There is a post match scramble, ie. those who do not get matched, make a dash for yet unfilled seats. There r also some programs that do not participate in match. Some get a prematch. This way, the actual figure runs 15-20% higher than match figures.

But still d remaining have no option but to apply again. N with each year, this group is greatly increasing in number. icon_eek.gif
