its a common problem for everyone...we read a lot....but the climax results in very few gains....
i read the robbins for 4 or 5 odd times with understanding...but still i find problems refering back...
its all becoz our mind doesnt take it as a story...discussions ..discussions...more revision of the same subject...will really help..but u have to b human...a attentive mind is the key..

I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH U ROSHAN
MORE OVER I BELIEVE THAT THERE SURELY ARE(SINCE I HAVE SEEEN SOME MYSELF) SOME SUPERCOMPUTERS, BUT BELIEVE ME-- THEY ARE VERY VERY FEW AND SO DON,T CONTRIBUTE MUCH TO THE COMPITITIONS WE WILL FACE.
SO WHEN WE FALL IN MAJORITY WHY SHOULD WE WORRY. LET THEM WORRY FOR WE WITH OUR HARD WORK, DETERMINATION CAN EASILY BEAT THEM.
MOREOVER I BELIEVE THERE SHOULD BE A WAY TO STUDY WHICH ONE HAS TO DISCOVER ONESELF SO THAT THE STUDY IS STRUCTURED PLANNED AND MORE RETAINABLE.WHERE THERE IS A WILL THERE HAS TO BE A WAY OUT
FIND OUT WAYS AND FUNDAS TO REMEMBER THINGS. LIST THEM DOWN KEEP REVICING AND THE MOST IMP AS I ALWAYS SAY-- DON''T WORRY

okay.. we had a prof in physiology called Prof.Bhat.
He used to say that if we read whatever we had to read upto the time we slept and just slept off immediately... all what we have read would rewind in our brain while we slept during REM sleep... & we could recollect better...
I dont know how true it is... but it does make a difference

we do this everyday..the result??..and these scientific studies dont have a great value..may have been a success over few people...but the question here is retaining the things which we have studied in the past...we can well retain to some extent the same year things...but wat abt the things which we dont revise or when the lecturer asks us a basic thing or a very easy question and we dont answer in the classroom...but we well know that we have already studied it...so here lies the problem...it all depends upon our own hold over the subject or anything which we do...

The reading part is so essential, i follow this method to study:
Preview: First read the summary at the end of the chapter, questions about that chapter, important points to be discussed in that chapter (written in the first few lines of each chapter), look at charts, figures, headings, subheadings, bold face, italics.
Question and then Read: Convert each subheading into as many questions as you can, then read and find answers to your questions, make new questions while you are reading.
Recite: Close the book and then recall all the questions answer them from your memory.
Review: Immediate and later reviews are very essential.
This method: PQR is scientific method of study, search google and you will find out.
Few more guidelines:
Associate what you learn. Like LR6SO4
Organize the stuff you learn e.g. Organize the etiology as CIMETIDINE: Congenital, congestive, infectious, immunological, inflammatory, metabolic, mechanical, endocrinological, traumatic, idiopathic, iatrogenic, degenerative, deficiencies, drugs, neoplastic and everything else.
Learn instead of reading.

studying
Prolene is right, the best way to study is to try and apply your reading to questions and scenarios that it relates to - i find onexaminationdotcom who do a medical student revision course have questions which help you apply what you are reading and then they give you explanations when you mark them, I think it is really important to familiarise yourself with the type of questions so at the very least if you don't know the answer you are capable to break down the question and eliminate certain options.
I always recommend using Kumar and Clark too to get further reading too!
Good luck all
Michael

just simplify what you read ,create an association link in your mind ,and try to recall on paper by pen after having finished the course ,also a simple diagram or sketch no matter how funny for your brain to retain and make an association during recall.

Try to review, imagine and apply what you've read in real life........Make the picture more vivid in your mind.....then you'll be able to recall more easily.....Have you noticed that students that give seminar on a particular subject remember that subject verbatim?????????//
Try thinking why this is so and you'll get your answer.........

What you have just read you will ahve to read it again after
* half an hour
* one day
* one week
* one month
* six months
Revision is the KEY !!!
Looks time consuming.. but if perfectly planned then this could be the best method when combined with an INTEREST to STUDY n KNOW MORE...
One the first time reading requires a lot of effort and time. Subsequent readings become easy and require less time if done in the proper order.

Mate,
Medicine is all about perserverence, patience and hardwork. The more you read, the better it sticks to your brain. Reading is directly proportional to success in exams!!!
Practice what you read with your colleagues or patients!! Remember patients are bored in the hospital because of visitor hours restriction. I am sure there are more than glad to chat to you.
But heres the secret; use a DICTAPHONE!!! Read a certain topic from two different recommended textbooks, while the dictaphone is on. Play the tap whenever you are free. It feels like listen to a music cd. Trust me, it works!!!

using maximum number of senses....
that is to read out loud to hear what you read...
to enhance concentration with meditation good sleep and diet
and of course make the subject interesting like with mneumonics or visualisation of difficult concept or association with known ridiculous memories or strong memories to remember mundane facts and details
Try it... proven it all works!
