Help: 5 Things you Should Keep In Mind while Posting [#]
Hi Friends,
There are certain etiquettes to be followed in forum.
These points if followed will make your post more pleasant to the eyes and more readable.
First and the foremost is, Be nice to all.
Before going into the details, i would like to make it clear that these are not compulsory rules.
1. Avoid using Caps Only to post
MAKING A POST FULL OF CAPITAL LETTERS IS EQUIVALENT TO YELLING OR SHOUTING AND IS SEEN AS A RUDE PRACTICE IN MOST OF THE INTERNET FORUMS. IT ALSO PUTS MORE STRAIN TO THE EYE THUS RESULTING IN PEOPLE NOT READING YOUR POST. OUR BRAIN NEED MORE TIME COMPREHEND A CAPS ONLY POST. USE CAPS ONLY IN HEADINGS OR IMPORTANT POINTS. I WILL TYPE THE SAME PARAGRAPH IN THE APPROPRIATE WAY TO GIVE YOU A CLEARER IDEA.
-Same paragraph in the proper way-
Making a post full of capital letters is equivalent to yelling or shouting and is see as a rude practice in most of the internet forums.
Its also puts more strain to the eye thus resulting in people not reading your post.
Our brains need more time to comprehend a Caps Only post. Use caps only in headings or important points.
2. Never use signatures which are very big in size
I can't specifically mention what is the size limit of the signatures,
but its better not to use a signature which is bigger than the content of your post.
3. Never make personal posts using Big Fonts & Odd colours
Quote: |
I am fine buddy. How are you? Have a great day. Went to a beach today and had loads of fun. The scenery was breath taking! |
It looks odd and less friendly, isn't it?
4. Never add too much text in a non study topic post
A Non Study topic post with loads of text(essay) is less interesting.
Always make sure your post in concise and upto the point.
If you are indeed making a big post,
please add some colours to the headings and add some pictures.
This really makes the thread more interesting.
5. Never Submit a Post without Previewing
Always your post before submitting it.
This is important because "Edit" function is disabled in many RxPG subforums.
So you won't be able to correct any mistakes after you press the button.

Thanks Pal.
These small points do matter in this online world where people are judged only by their words!!

well words are all that we can see of a person in here, so yeah i bet, we judge on the basis of our writing and responses.
Anyway, keep up the good work BGM.

Point No.6
Avoid spelling mistakes - Use Mozilla Firefox
Don't make very obvious spelling mistakes in Thread Headings:
eg: (some real thread headings)
Want a Study Partener
Preparation Class By Proffessionals
First impression is the best impression.
So always take care not to make spelling mistakes at least in thread headings.
Such spelling mistakes are not expected from a doctor working in India or abroad.
Firefox Web Browser has an in-built Spell Checker.
Only RxPG members can see links here! Register or Login!
|
It will check the text you type in the Reply Box for spelling mistakes,
and will highlight them.

Very useful tips, indeed. I think I've been aware of, and following these etiquette quite subconsciously because of habit of editing on Wikipedia, but never thought of how long posts could be boring to read. I'll try to make my posts more interesting by adding pictures, and colors, though used to think that'd make posts look gaudy, but not any more!

I myself was going to suggest adding some sort of dictionary to the browser to those who've been making many spelling mistakes. But, it's unfortunate to note that not many are bothered about how their language looks. There's a lot of "chalta hai" attitude on the internet. By the way, I do use Firefox, and it's really nice to work with.

The problem with previewing is that it takes a lot of time for the pages to load, and previewing one's post before submitting makes the entire process all the more tedious. I do preview before submitting posts with URLs, though. So, I think the advisory should be modified to apply only to long and complicated posts, not short or curt replies.

Yes i agree with you. We don't need to preview while making short posts, still you see in the previous post the images got replaced by the urls. Its something which happens in rxpg while we quote. Just a harmless bug due to an extra Only RxPG members can see links here! Register or Login!

hey BGM why disable editing of posts?
especially when it comes to recalled q/a threads ,one might want to edit posts in order to add options or change answers.
i suppose rxpg has disabled edit to prevent abuse but it if there are active moderators there should be not much reason to worry about abuse.

right said BGM...all the 5 points are correct.
specially the 5th n 2nd one.
i have never read a single post which is lengthy..becoz..it repels me.
there r sum interviews in sum threads which r not welll framed n too lengthy to read.
excessive texts makes a post boring to read.
also any description or story which is long n contains excessive texts just repel us.
post which are to the point are interesting n readable.

@BGM:
how does one edit posts??????....
very much needed if some error or mistake in the post one has posted..
atleast the person who has started the thread should be allowed to edit. so we can reduce the burden on the team.
Q2: where to suggest improvements for rxpg

Time limited edit with version control (like wikipedia) will be available in new version of RxPG which would be shortly launched.
