prevalence of blindness is greatest in subsaharan africa.

global burden of blindness is greatest in SE asia.

what is the difference in these two btw.
that was a text part in amit ashish -AIIMS 2004 discussion.

diff in terminology, only

prevalance means total no of cases of blind at any time, while burden of blindness is proportion of no. of blind in a particular region to global no of blinds.

prevalance is max in sub saharan area 1.4%.rt

to add further to Dratkins comment,

prevalence is in relation to the population of area.....so,although the no. of blind people is more in SE Asia, the population is much much higher... and the ratio comes out to be lesser than that of Subsahara(which has smaller population)

but then shouldnt the global burden be max ,where the prevalence is max?

or is it that we calculate burden of blindness as proportion of population that is blind -and that rationis more in subsahan africa -so it has more global burden?

Prevalence depends on the normal population of the area whereas global burden does not.

let me try to explain with an example.....

suppose, the total no of blind people in the whole world is 100.
and 24 of them r in South asia
while 19 in subsahara.

the population in south asia is 3200
and that of subsahara is 1600

now, global burden wud be the no. of blind in the area divided by world's blind population*100
i.e south asia(24) has greater global burden than subsahara(19)

coming to prevalence,
it is the no. of blind people in the area/population of the area *100

in south asia,its 24/3200 * 100=.75

while in subsahara its 19/1600 * 100=1.2

the prevalence comes out to be higher in subsahara b'cos the NORMAL population is about HALF that of south asia.

so,the values of global burden and prevalence do not correspond.

hope this helps
