Is there any benefit of doing MS Surgery in India for getting surgical residency in US?
Hi everyone, I am joining MS general surgery this year. In the future I am interested to do a surgical residency in the US. I know that it is one of the most sought after courses in US, and the chances of an Indian grad making it are very slim.
I would like to know, what are the things that one might do in order to boost one's resume so that a surgical residency can be considered for him?
Also I've heard that some med schools give some weightage if they hear that i have undergone a surgical course or have been associated with some research concerning surgery. Is it true?
Cheers... icon_wink.gif

you are absolutely right that surgery is one of the most sought after course in us but and img can get it provided they have good scores and an excellent resume. you will have to supplement these is US clinical experience. some programs do prefer candidates who have prior training in surgery esp in NY. make sure that you attend a lot of conferences and try to get atleast 4-5 publications in indexed journals.

it is possible to get a residency in general surgery. On the other hand the scope for an IMG to get plastic surgery residency is next to impossible. plastic surgery is a very popular and competitive residency to get in with all seats going to american medical graduates. The data from main residency match 2011 support the fact that plastic surgery is very tough to get into for IMGs

Hi, I'm from Bangladesh and the same topic was being in my thoughts for a while. My final prof is over and internship is going to start within 2 weeks. I'm interested in doing residency in surgery (general) in the US and try to get a fellowship later. The way I thought was, completing upto step 2 ck within 1 year after internship, then try for some USCE and also sit for step 2 CS while in the US (ok, i know it'll be very tough). But after talking to some seniors and seeing this post, I think what if I try for surgery PG in my country, then I apply for residency in the US? Even then I have to take the steps. And being a PG, will the chances of getting a residency get feeble? But one thing is, i'll get a good surgical exposure in my country but not the research and latest technology. I'm in a dilemma now... Any suggestions guys??
