Quick Scroll tubular maximum of a kidney...... 07.08.04 (4 years ago) #1

tubular maximum for kidney in practice is actually less than the calculated value because..
1.defferent nephrons have different lengths
2.depends on gfr
3.depends on renal blood flow
4.depends on blood pressure.

kindly explain with references and whats the funda of tubular maximum???

The amount of a substance that's reabsorbed or secreted depends on the substance's maximum tubular transport capacity - the maximum amount of a substance that can be reabsorbed or secreted in a minute without saturating the renal system.

For example, in diabetes mellitus, excess glucose in the blood overwhelms the renal tubules and causes glucose to appear in the urine (glycosuria). In other cases, when glomeruli are damaged, protein appears in the urine (proteinuria) because the large protein molecules pass into the urine instead of being reabsorbed.

gfr makes more sense, as both renal blood flow and pressures affect it. it obviosly varies throughout the kidney.

lengths doesnt explain too much because large parts of a nepron cant absorb glucose. so increase lenghts may not transcend to differing absorbtive capacity.
