usmle :doubts abt how to go through the entire process..
hi all,

it has been my dream to practise in US. and i was told a very gr8 number of things abt it. so i will state my worries one by one.

1) ppl say that the process of applying for USMLE, might cost a lot..even if that doesnt cost, the process of going to US and staying there until step 3 is finished might consume a lot of funds(10-15 lacks i read somewhere in this forum) is this true?

if that is the case, how does one support oneself through this process. sorry if this query is sounding stupid, but there are a lot of rumors flying around usmle..wanted to clarify..

thanks in advance

UNANSWERED: Anyone wants to buy my Uworld Subscription?

Hi: it's true taat going to US, surviving the herculious task of getting into residency traning, plus investing lakhs of rupee to get into the process and the system, is a long and tough journey. Now you have to take the right decision.

Good luck!

usmle is like a jackpot... only if you are able to hit it.. i meant only if you are able to get into residency...!! otherwise, you end up investing both money and time without fruitful returns...!!

I have a doubt and i need help/ I finished my internship in 2010. Wasted two years prep for indian entrance. but now i wanna go to usa.i always wanted to, but for some reason, had decided on stayin in india itself. How do i start preparing for mle?. im so clueless.plz help

and what are the chances of gettin a research or externship? I need OBGY residency. Is it possible to get it? What would be the requirements for that?
Plz help me with info. I have not much idea how to go about things. im startin from scratch.
thanks

One of my friend finished internship in 2008. He will be finishing MS surgery in india in 2012 april. If he starts writin the steps, will he get a match? i mean, is he considered old grad? is the MS surgery from india taken as experience? Is it even possible to get surgery residency there/ PLz help with this too

1)start looking for any links in usa,,i mean doctors who have links with program directors(PD) --this will be of immense help..
2)if you really have decided for mle then dont look back no matter what happens coz its a long process,,, start with STEP 1(ana,phy,biochem,path,pharm,micro,behavio) kaplan notes, uworld, brs series books, goljan patho, nbme assessment tests, uworld assessment, first aid... time 5-8 months if seriously wanna go for OBG,, for surgical branch min 250 scores are required in step 1.. if you get below this then forget this branch or look for help from links or get your CV very strong(like US exp,US research,US LOR's)
3)STEP 2 CK old final subjects same prep materials as above but for step 2 books,, time 4-6 months,, score for OBG branch 250+...
4)then STEP 2 clinical skill exam,, prac exam only in US.. you either pass or fail,, try to pass in first attempt coz if you get f here then even your 250 score will seem very low in front of this... time 2 months...
5)GET YOUR CV THE BEST---- like if you have distinctions, awards, gold medals in your grad,,some presentations in good countries or institutions,,paper work, reserch published in some good journals,,work experience since you are also old grad(you should not be free after your grad),,some conference stuff, some case publishing,,,, stuff like these from india if you can get
6)US CLINICAL EXP-- observorship easy to get but need to have contacts,, externship (greater value than obs) but very difficult to get,,do get these in OBG only,,, research gets only if you have prior exp of research,, these all depend on your CV and your links

last but not the least have patience, courage and 2-3 spare years of life

your friend is old grad but he has work exp as he immediately got surgery after internship so his 3 years will count but ti is only regarded as work exp in surgery and he also have to go thru same steps as you... his cv will be strong if he has good thesis, good exp,,,, but again surgery is very demanding so his scores shd be also high+US research that matters in surgery...its possible to get but they take cream ony,, so his scores will matter a lot..........

Hi: EM residency is one among the tough to get in for fmg's. Any outside US degree is considered just an "experiance".

Good luck!

Any on please tell me in the entire process "the interviews" come before matching or after ? What is pre match , Who is conducting interviews , Is it ECFMG or Board or individual institutions ?

linkin89

hello everyone
have a doubt ...is it a rule that step 2cs should be completed by mid Sept. of an year to be able to apply for the match next year in jan-feb?
also, are interviews conducted throughout the year or only in jan-feb ?

mini_med

are paid externships given equal value as the USCE? i mean, dont they know that paid externships are done on the basis of money and not merit?

mparvez
Aim USMLE Jobs

Hi: Ideally, one should pass step-1, step-2 ck & cs and get ecfmg certified before September 1st. Thereby, you can apply to programs with complete cv with ecfmg certification. The interviews will start from mid September, and will continue till February 1st week. The match will take place in March 2nd week. If you agree for a position with a certain program before mattch, it's called "prematch".

Good luck!

mini_med

@mparvez- i heard they have cancelled pre-matches now. is that true?

radiology residency is one of the tougher residencies to get into. Do however consider doing a fellowship in radiology especially since you have already finished your post graduate training in radiology from home country. Some places allow you to do a fellowship without residency training in US.

agree with chelsi statement. You have to give USMLE and pass the steps to even do fellowships

you need to pass USMLE 1 and 2CS/CK for ECFMG certification. from ECFMG site: your Form 186 must be sent to ECFMG directly from the office of the medical school official who signed the form. If the form is not sent to ECFMG from the office of the medical school official, it will not be accepted.
