Suicidal rate is 9.9 / 1 lakh / year in India – record
10 – 15 / 1 lakh / year – without record
5 – 30 / 1 lakh / year in World
Attempted Suicide : Complete Suicide = 10 : 1
Highest Suicide Risk : 18 – 30 Yrs.
Places in India : Pondicherry, West Bengal, Chennai, Bangalore
Common causes of suicide are
I. Psychiatric Disorders
1. Depression
  i. Major depression
ii. Depression secondary to physical illness.
iii. Reactive depression
  2. Alcoholism and drug dependence
  3. Schizophrenia

-Genetic factors and biochemical factors (low levels of 5-HIAA)
II. Physical Disorders
- incurable or painful physical disorders
- AIDS
- Often commit suicide (13.5% of all suicides in India)
III. Psychosocial Factors
- Failure in Examination
- Failure in Love
- Dowry Difficulties
- Marital Difficulties
- Illegitimate Pregnancy
- Family Dispute
- Psychopathology
- Loss of a loved object
- Occupational and Financial Difficulties
