In defecation:
(i) excitation of anorectal mechanoreceptors initiates the defecation reflex
(ii) the defecation reflex involves relaxation of the rectal wall
(iii) the internal anal sphincter is relaxed via inhibitory neurones in the intrinsic nerve plexuses
(iv) the external anal sphincter is controlled by alpha motoneurones running in the pudendal nerve
(v) in the defecation reflex, impulses will occur in the parasympathetic fibres running in the pelvic nerves
