Fiji's Labour Party has warned the government to act immediately to address the country's ongoing medical staff shortage.

Fiji has lost many of its doctors and nurses over the past few years through immigration, attributed largely to political instability and poor working conditions.

The Labour MP for the Nadi Rural Indian Communal constituency, Gunasagaran Goundar, says the government's policy of recruiting overseas doctors will not solve the problem in the long-term.

"It's a short-term solution - the government has been doing it for the last decade or so," Mr Goundar said.

"The most important thing is the working environment, the work ethic, the government's attitude towards the workers - the nurses and doctors - is of paramount importance," he said.

"If you have a satisfied workforce, I think that we can retain them in the service."
