Quick Scroll breast lump...how to diagnose??? 06.25.04 (4 years ago) #1

breast lump is best diagnosed by....
1.FNAC
2.bilateral mammography
3.USG
4CECT of breast
5.chest x ray
now what i dont understand in thsi question is that what exactly the question is demanding.......
is it asking "if we are in doubt that whether the lump is present or not ( may be due to fatty breasts ) how to make sure of the presence of the lump???""""
or its asking......
"if a lump is confirmed to be present already then how to diagose exactly what it is...????""""
choudhary gives the answer as FNAC but i think its mammography!!! kindly enlighten

mammography is inferior to FNAC as it will only suggest a diagnosis(say a carcinoma, cyst) icon_smile.gif

but FNAC will give the histological picture of what the lump is made of. icon_eek.gif

well,
thinking this fact in mind was the concept of screening schedules for breast cancer was started.

& for screening 2 common methods are chosen
1)mammography
2)breast self examination(BSE)

The goal of screening mammography is to detect breast cancer when it is still too small to be felt by a physician or the patient.

Research has shown that the early detection of small breast cancers by screening mammography greatly improves a woman's chances for successful treatment

& this improvment in prognosis is found almost nil with BSE.

hence, mammography is considered superior in detection of breast lump.
