1. Are the airways narrowed? Use a peak flow meter (PEF) or spirometry.
o Peak flow meters can be issued on prescription and used at home by patients, particularly asthmatics.
o Spirometry gives us FEV1 (forced expiratory volume in 1 second) and FVC (forced vital capacity); these are assessed against predicted values and also combined to give the FEV1:FVC ratio, a measure of airway limitation that can differentiate obstructive from restrictive lung disease.
2. Are the lungs a normal size? Use helium dilution or body plethysmography.
3. Is gas uptake normal? Use diffusing capacity/transfer factor.
