Scotch Tape Preparation For Detection of Pinworm Infection

Pinworm eggs are deposited around the perianal region and are best recovered by this method if used before defecation in the morning.

Hold a 2-to-2 ½ inch long strip of Scotch tape sticky side out with a pair of forceps or place over the gluteus end of a test tube or tongue depressor.

Press Scotch tape gently but firmly around the perianal area of the patient.

Forward to laboratory for testing.

Paddle swabs or pinworm paddles may also be used. This consists of a plastic paddle with an adhesive on one side. The sticky side is pressed onto the anal skin and then examined microscopically.

scotch tape test is a specifuc test for detecting E. vermicularis or commonly known as the pinworm.at night when the body is at rest the adult female lays numerous eggs in the perianal region of the host.so it is important for the specimen to be collected early ni the morningbefore the patient washes or defecates.in addition to tapeworms this procedure os also helpful in detecting taenia eggs. th procedure is very well explained by Dr. jaykill.
