aqueductal stenosis is the most common cause of congenital hydrocephalus.
But stenosis can also occur secondary to haemorhage or infection esp. in infant in which these may induce gliosis leading to aqueductal stenosis.
but meningitis, if not causing aque. stenosis, will
commonly cause non Obs . hydrocephalus.
so in this ques. answer would be aqueductal
stenosis. even in infancy it is the MC cause
since it can be d/t cong., infection, or haem.

however i'm not sure about older age gr
since nelson is mainly referring to infancy.

meningitis does not cause non obstructive hydrocephalus.

its a cause of obstruction to the absorption of CSF at arachnoid vili due to exudates .

infact only major form of nonobstructive HC-is oversecretion of CSF due to choroid tumor.

NELSON 16/e p 1810 "non obstructive or comm. hydro. results from obliteration of subarachnoid cisterns or malfunction of arachnoidal villi ......pnemococcal and tubercular meningitis have a propensity to produce a thick, tenacious exudate that obstructs the basal cisterns..."

manpreet you said about meningitis "its a cause of obstruction to the absorption of CSF at arachnoid vili due to exudates . "
that is what non obst. or commu. hydroce. is.
obstru. hydroce. is obstru within ventricular system not at cisterns.

Well, it's a rpt question. Commonest cause of obstructive hydrocephalus is lesions at aqueduct or near 4th ventricle....so the ans is aqueductal stenosis..

post-meningitic & post-haemorrhagic are the commonest causes for non-obstructive hydrocephalus..

Well, Manpreet, 'Obstruction' is in the circulation path of CSF, that's y it is non-communicating hydrocephalus..

non-obstructive or communicating hydrocephalus results from either excessive CSF production or inadequate CSF absorption....
