as a private practitioner u'll see most of these cases varying on the areas u practice on. However most of the cases will be referred to you, so u need to have good contacts. In metros there is more awareness about the field, while in small centres there is still a fair amount of taboo associated with us. u c we r still called "paagalon ke doctor" icon_wink.gif
I dunno abt scope in US & Aus i'm not planning to go at all.

in good places, u get to see the whole range.schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders, bipolar, depression, anxiety disorders, ocd, dissociative, personality, substance use, dementias, mental retardation .............everything.

child Psychiatry is restricted to few colleges in india. pgi, NIMHANS , vellore are a few of them.

geriatric Psychiatry is still rare.

consultation-liasion Psychiatry is a very good field to be in. try working in places like CMC Vellore or other general hospital bases Psychiatry setups. NIMHANS will not help u much here.

Forensic Psychiatry is another area of interest. there are more ...deaddiction, marital ....

if u are working in a rural setup/phc, u will probably see more of acute psychosis, depression, and sub syndromic depression/anxiety, adjustment problems etc

i was going through the posts and found it surprising to note that somone had seen only one case of mania!!!!!! wonder which setup he/she is working in. will be very interesting to know.
