Aim USMLE Step 1

is it true that usmle is going to be a shut door for new doctors?
I read it somewhere in this forum.

From 2015 the total american graduates will surpass the number of residency positions therefore they will not need any fmg or img.so From next year matching it will be next to no entry.till now there was some residency position left even after taking all american grduates dats why they needed fmg n img to fill those positions.but now they dont need anymore.now it will be a fight among american graduates only becaue the number of american graduates has crossed the number of residency poitions, dat will be from 2015.(same which is happening in india)
so NO MORE IMG's FROM 2015

So new usmle aspirant must think twice before putting all your hardwork and money towards usmle?

I have heard this from multiple sources as well, but I am not sure how true it is…I mean, I can tell you that it IS true that there are more US medical students graduating every year (because states are opening up new medical colleges and existing colleges are increasing their seats intake). Also, the American DO students will be competing for residency spots along with the US MD students so that means FMG's have to compete against both DO's and MD's.

Given these facts, I think residency will be more difficult to get but I don't know how much effect this will have and when.

Have any of your seniors explained the situation to you? How was their residency experience? Best is to gain the true picture from some recent MBBS graduate who is currently trying for US residency. They will know more than us I guess...

The fear is because in 2011 US has permitted 16000 addl MBBS type of students to get enrolled who will pass out in 2015. This will far exceed the demand in US. Then every year 16000 addl students would qualify which would cut down the USMLE quota

Statistics
USMLE is not shutting down. USMLE will never shut down. There is no reason why any of the current USMLE aspirants should abandon their pursuit (unless they desire to..).

The meat of the matter: Following are some of the statistics which are taken from NRMP survey data 2013 match. These statistics were presented in an IMG symposium which was conducted in Aug 2014 in New York. (please don't mind the clarity of the pics)

Additionally there are ratios of No of USMGs applying and successful candidates. Similarly ratios of IMGs who are applying and successful IMGs.

Those who are interested are encouraged to check latest information provided by NRMP as it becomes available. This information is usually available free and not meant for internal circulation. All these organizations are run extremely professionally. It is made sure that smallest of the important developments are communicated to the students as early as possible. So when somebody says "USMLE is shutting down" either you have to take gist of the statement or realize that it's a statement made based on passion and not based on objective information and logic.

Those who have been genuinely puzzled or demoralized by the subject of the thread should also go through the entire statistics report, see the success ratios with their own eyes and make the further decisions.

Always remember: BE current and be updated.
