can somebody please clarify the most common among chilhood brain tumors...
1) most common over all... astrocytoma
2) MC infratentorial.... ?medulloblastoma or astrocytoma
3) best progosis
4) most responsive to radiotherapy...

thanx...i'm confused wit wats given in ghai vs tripathi n ashish gupta

based on location and histology

52% supratentorial
just under half are cerebral hemisphere astrocytomas (mostly low grade)
1/8 craniopharyngiomas
1/8 opticochiasmatic-hypothalamic gliomas
remainder
pineal region tumors (germinoma, pineal parenchymal cell tumors)
PNET
choroid plexus papilloma
Miscellaneous (ganglioglioma, oligodendroglioma are rare)

48% infratentorial
1/3 cerebellar astrocytomas
1/4 brainstem gliomas
1/4 medulloblastomas (PNET-MB)
1/8 ependymomas

thats right skjeev, although i'm confused regarding infratentorial...
i'll quote- ghai(pg 471,5th edition), emedicine n other sites say...MC infratentorial = medulloblasltoma
mudit khanna, says MC infratentorial =cerebellar astrocytoma.
wats the right ans????

2/3rd brain tumours in children r infratentorial--

and most common tumour is astrocytoma in that cerebellum is common site.

i read in ghai only..dont look for exact words in a sentence.

i feel it should be cerebellar astrocytoma.
