i am from india came to CA.
can H4 visa holders apply for SSN???
what is the alternate for this???
i need SSN for my Evaluation purpose.
plz help me.

No Luice,there is no way for a H4 holder to get an SSN...
To get an SSN you should be either working or is a student....

H4 holders can get a Driver's license, open a Bank account, or even go to college. Children on H4 visas do not need a separate visa to attend school.
But a person on an H4 status is not allowed to work unless and until the person gets a Change of Status from the INS from H4 to H1B status. Currently INS does not issue Social Security Number (SSN) to H4 visa holders.

If you need SSN for any purpose, for eg: getting driver's lisense, you can apply for an Ineligibility Certificate, showing that you are ineligible for SSN...It's what I did for applying my driver's lisense...I was so surprised to see that I got the certificate on the spot..It hardly took 10 minutes for them to issue me one...which would take atleast one month, if not more, in India...
