doing something to avoid noxius/unpleasant thing.
As per first aid example-
Desired behaviour--pressing button

rat is given continuos shock in the cage, and shock is avoided when mouse presses the button. So rat will repeadtedly press button to avaoid shock.
So here the desired action (pressing button) is learned as a means of rescuing/avoiding the unpleasant thing(shock)

And yes its different from punishment- where unpleasant thing is given in order to "suppress" the unwanted behavious.e.g. If rat gets a shock by pressing the button, rat will eventually stop pressing it. here desired behaviour was to stay away from pressing button.

in real life-
friends are alsways wasting our time but they dont disturb us when we study. So if we study only to avoid disturbance from friends its negative reinforcement.
