Medics take advantage of visa offer
By Michelle Grattan
January 25, 2004

Overseas doctors appear to be responding to new liberalised conditions announced recently to attract them to Australia .

In the two weeks after December 19, when regulations changed, 64 doctors and their dependents were granted temporary entry visas.

Overseas-trained doctors practising in Australia on temporary visas can now apply to have their visas renewed without leaving the country.

Doctors can also now apply for four-year visas rather than the previous limit of two years.

The Government says the longer visa will make it easier for overseas-trained doctors to undertake Australian Medical Council examinations as well as vocational and other training.

The Immigration Department is also to give priority to processing applications from trained doctors, and from April doctors will be included on the skilled occupations list of the migration program.

Doctors can renew their temporary visas as many times as they like, unlike some other people on temporary visas.

At present there are about 2000 doctors from overseas practising in Australia . The shortage of doctors means there there is less competition and therefore less incentive for doctors to bulk bill.

While the Government is also boosting the locally trained supply, this takes a long time.

Hello guys! I am currently working in UK. I had taken PLAB test in the past and few days ago (..about time..) i managed to obtain FULL registration with GMC (UK). I am planning to specialize in Medical Oncology. So, does anyone know whether i can get registered with AMC and work in Australia with the qualification i have now? Or do i need to take the AMC exam to work there? Please let me know. Thanks in advance!
