Quick Scroll An ethical problem 11.09.06 (2 years ago) #1

I had recently a little debate with my lecturer. I said that (because I had heard it) in USA (me and my lecturer are not from USA, actually Estonia) in some cases doctors can (by court order) step over patient wishes regarding the methods and the way of treatment.

For example:

1. When patient in the procces of treating an illness is given some sort of drugs that may influence his rational behaviour and judgement-making. And patient is for example declining treatments and tests so that these decisions may severly cause his health.

2. When patient is told that he/she has incurable cancer and he/she is emotionally off-balance and is taking decisions that are really not good for his/her health

So I would like to know where exactly I could find information about these incidents, are they existing as laws, if they are then where I could find that in clear writing?
Every information is a help for me, so anybody who has experience or the knowledge about it please help me out. And if you have a opinion about how these things might be, then remember I have to represent my idea with hard evidence (U.S. law or something).

Terribly sorry if my English is bad! icon_redface.gif
