Dear DJ,
When you come to UK for PLAB
2 exam, you come with a tourist visa which is usually issued for 6 months.
You are not allowed to work any where until you have either:
1. Work Permit, or
2. Permit free training
Work permit can be issued for any job in UK and it is arranged by the employers only. For that your employer need to certify to Home Office, UK that no eligible UK citizen is available for the job you are getting. Trust doctors in NHS work on work permit and there is usually no problem in getting work permits in NHS. Many people do nursing, phlebotomist jobs on work permit before they get their first doctor job (although it is not common with Indian docs, it is popular way to survive in docs from phillipines and china). Work permit is job specific and you can not work else where with it. It expires as soon as your job is finished.
Permit free training starts when you get into a training job like SHO. You can not do any other work while on permit free.
PLAB
visas are easy to get by and almost everyone gets it. Dont spoil your chances of getting a decent visa by thinking too much about bizzare things like student visa etc. Of course if you can afford british courses, you are welcome to do that. Their is a large PLAB
community in eastham london and once you arrive here, you will easily learn the ways to survive from them.
all the best

Dear All
I too, like the thousands of others , am a post PLAB
2 doc. I have been doing a clinical attachment at UCH for the past 4 + months. I had to extend my visa on the grounds of clinical attachment, which is not easy to get(Attachment) but not impossible either.
Few things i would like to comment on and ask as well. If im correct the permit free training has ended from this august(2006) onwards ? Im not sure maybe i got that wrong , could you please clarify with us ,if you know, moderator? As i tried to do locums through a locum agency and i was advised that i cannot as the PFT ended this August.
For ppl who want to come and do odd jobs while studying and also looking for work . Its not impossible to find odd jobs, maybe you can try working in a corner shop or various other types of things like baby sitting, delivering leafletts, you could even work in some companies if you know the right type of ppl who are willing to employ you on the short term basis, ets .... it could be anything.
But legally you do not have the right to work or receive any other sort of benefit from public funds.
Do bear in mind some hospitals even ask you for a specific visa for your clinical attachment, which i think is a big joke. But the ones who ask for one are a very few. FOllowing an attachment or while doign an attachment you might want to try doing Locum jobs so that you can get some money into ur pockets plus its also good for experence. You might be able to find this in your own hospital or very very a rarely in a hospital which ur not doing ur attachmetn at. BUt if you do attempt to do it through a Locum agency or in most of the other cases you wont be able to succeed as they require you to have either a workpermit(HSMP or other) or have a students visa for this.
Im sorry i seem to be discouraging some , but unless you are really lcuky when you get here ,or have a very healthy bank balance, be prepared to go through some hardships. I wish none of you have to. But after sometime things can definitely work out for the better.BUt hey Im not the one guaranteeing anything;)
If i was given an oppurtunity to re-aplly for PLAB
i would definitely apply by a students visa as it would have made my life much much more easier .
There are plenty of ways to get a students visa, a lot depend from where you are applying .
GOod Luck all , and i wish you guys the very best !Hope we all get jobs very soon !

Ooops i also forgot to mention that , it is not possible to convert your PLAB
visa into a students visa while you are in the Uk. you will have to go back to your country of origin and reapply if you are hoping to do so. This is the rule as it stands no. Dont know if it will change in the future.
