hey, this is no gymansts' thread..ita abt putting up short n sweet titbits of info to learn in physio that can confabulate our simple minds..hence the name "somersaults"!!! hope this will help all of us..
so here's my first titbit:
During exercise, the sympathetic outflow increases, but total peripheral resistance decreases!!
reason: though the sympathetic discharge increases,TPR decreases due to vasodilation which is mediated by the local metabolic vasodilators released in the blood from metabolic activity of skeletal muscles.these vasodilators are- lactate, potassium ions, adenosine..

Response to HYPOXIA-
LUNGS - causes vasoconstriction.
OTHER ORGANS- vasodilataion.
This is important in lung as vasoconstriction diverts blood away frm poorly ventilated areas of the lung to well ventilated regions..

When the connection between hypothalamus & ant.pituitary is severed, secretion of all ant.pituitary hormones decreases, but prolactin increases!!
REASON:--->
All the ant. pituitary hormones are controlled by stimulatory hypothalamic hormones,except prolactin.It is inhibited by the Prolactin inhibiting factor(dopamine),which on getting removed in damage of pituitary stalk leads to chronic elevation of prolactin!!

Absence of cortisol is not life-threatening in normal conditions, but in stresses (like fasting,exercise),it can be fatal!!
REASON:--->
Absence of cortisol leads to an inability to use energy in the form of both glucose & fatty acids.In normal conditions, when the person is having adequate meals,it is fine.But,when the energy demands increase(exercise) or the energy input is less(fasting),it is fatal!!
