Ganguly Committee submits recommendations for PG courses in health sector

The Ganguly Committee which was set up in November 2006 to draft/review course structure for full-time and distance education programmes in respect of Health Facility Planning & Designing and Healthcare Engineering & Management submitted its report. The Committee has recommended starting these two two highly multi-disciplinary programmes as 'Master's in Health Facility Planning & Designing" and Master's in Healthcare Engineering & Management. Both these courses will be started in the PGI, Chandigarh. The Committee also recommended starting similar courses for middle managers in states at Polytechnic and IIT level

Such training facilities/courses are being developed for the first time in South East Asia and India has the potentiality of becoming a 'knowledge hub'. Due to fast changing medical technology hospital buildings require constant changes and hence constant research in designs, building technologies, new materials, space utilization sustainability, green concepts and applications. Efficiently run hospitals will contribute a lot in medical tourisms.

It is hoped that these programmes being the first in South East Asia will also help in certified Healthcare manpower export. Healthcare Engineers are important adjunct of Hospital Administrations and inter-disciplinary approach will help patient care, hospital environs and quality of life of patients. The Committee has strongly recommended that these courses be started in 2007.

India has ambitious plants to expand healthcare facilities at all levels. The Corporate and Private Sector Hospitals are being built. However, during exercise of establishing 6 new AIIMS type Institutes and upgrading 13 Medical Colleges, a serious difficulty was experienced in locating qualified Hospital Architects and Hospital Engineers. Also the Management of Hospital Engineering Services including building, plants, machinery, equipments require high caliber engineers for efficient running of hospitals.

These are micro-specialties in wider areas of public health. The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare plans to advise states to develop Health Engineering Courses at Master's, Post-Diploma and Technician level.
