hi!
i wanted to know whether the size of photos and videos taken in a digital camera depend upon the resolution of the pictures( no of mega pixels) . if yes, what would be an ideal resolution to go for if one is looking for good quality pictures without bulky pic sizes?
thanks!

Yes, the quality of pictures taken from a digital camera & its size does depend on the the resolution(Mega pixel) of the camera.
for example,
A photo taken from a VGA camera(<1Megapixel) camera will have a size of 640*480 in dimensions and about 30-40kb in size.
As the resolution increases, the size in Kb & dimensions increases.
A 5-6 megapixel camera can produce images of size 10240*7680 dimensions and 30-40mb size!(Usual memory cards are 256MB-512MB size)
If you plan on printing images by either printer or professional photo finishing, and up to 5" X 7" in size, then good results will be obtained using a 1 mega-pixel camera. any further increase in size will cause the image to get pixelated.
If you plan on printing images 8" X 10" in size, then good results will be obtained using a 2 mega-pixel camera.
So if u are not a professional photographer the ideal resolution will be around 2 Megapixel. This will produce decent images with good clarity and will also save the space in your memory card.

Dear drsn77,
As the query was related to Camera, i am moving the thread to "Cameras" forum in Tech-Zone, so that we will get more responses when the query is placed in appropriate forum. I hope you will understand. Thank you very much.

the amount of light in which you are shooting the pic is a very critical component...
if you have ample amount of light like outside in the sun then even 1 MP pic will come out very good...
in my experience 3 megapixel pic gives a very nice quality for normal use whie keeping down the file size to a manageable level....
bumping up the resolution more than that is just a waste of space

Always keep the aspect ratio and shoot according to your requirement.
