You are talking bout the first person shooters or FPS.. they are not compatible with gamepad becoz it is really boring playing an FPS with gamepad.. the best way to play FPS is still with keyboard and mouse..like the best way to play flight simulations is with Joystick...
gamepad simply doesnt have the sensitivity required to play FPS...

as for PS2 emulators.. yes they are available and require no credit card ... but they support very few games and that too not fully... try searching for PCSX2 on google.

btw.. why did u sell the ps2? its a great piece of hardware and you can do so many things with it...
