You need to bear in mind you only have 5 minutes.... In that time you need to check somebody's capacity to understand and retain information. If they can't then there is likely to be an issue with giving consent.

AMT is a good way of initially assessing this as it assesses long and short term recall and orientation to place, time and person.

If they don't do so well on AMT then you need to tell the examiner you would like a more thorough assessment.

All this will have changed since the Mental Capacity Act was introduced this year (long after this posting was originally made!)

the answer is what Saleel has writen there , we've been told the same as well, but if the examiner ask what is your finding you should tell i've to speak to the patien again ,assess her again , talk to my senier, talk to her family and all people who are involved with her care , and make the desicion
