size and streangth really matters in orthopaedics. Its my personal experience. But female sex has nothing to do it because my asst.PROFESSORorthopaedics is a madam. But she is well built athletic and rugged lady made for orthopaedics.Myself was a 60 kg frail built thin man i can remember how i was struggling to reduce a posterior hip dislocation under GA during my PG days.I was even struggling to examine hip joint if a well built patient lands on table.

orthopaedics isn't just about trauma....u could branch out into hand surgery or spine....but in the beginning it's mostly trauma and requires physical endurance and strength...in every big hospital there's always one lady orthopaedics surgeon.... but it's mostly male dominated.... i think a certain testosterone based mindset is needed for orthopaedics ...not meant for the frail and faint hearted (male or female)

great post.it actually explains what difficulties real and imagined one might face.......it is encouraging to hear that there r ways 2 cope up with it.....i would like 2 add my own experience abt orthopaedics and surgery 2 this.....

i had a lady prof 4 surg who faced a lot and of course encouraged all students alike irresp of their chromosome....

i scored the highest in my surg practicals and that 2 frm male externals.....they never even mentioned the fact that i could do well inspite of being a gal....

my college was in a rural area and my profs were also frm rural backgrnds...initially they used 2 be highly skeptical abt gals doing well in the traditionally male dominated fields of surg ,but i guess when they found out that i was good at my stuff they really admired it and later as time went they even forgot abt the fact that they had thought me being a girl i could do well in their fields...they juts thought of me as a student doing well in surg ,,,not a female student doing well in surg..

in orthopaedics i had a totally diff experience.....my orthopaedics prof was a male chauvinist....he gave the impression that gals should not b entering medicine at all, forget orthopaedics ....

in my prelims he really bailed me and another topper out by saying that i selected the wrong field inspite of me not really saying anything grossly wrong......the whole PL i slogged over orthopaedics every single day at leats 4 a few mins....i got nightmares and panicky whenevr i thought abt facing an orthopaedics exam again..but i think when ur sincere enough God helps u....

i m really happy 2 say that i succeeded in getting 100% marks in orthopaedics pracs...frm internals as well as externals.in table vivas as well as case.......in fact my viva reached such a great pt that i wa stold i m the highest in class now and if i answer one more qt il b getting full marks.which luckily i cud.......and the icing on the cake was my prof ,,,yes the same one who said why i entered the profession said that i should join his dept 4 MD orthopaedics and he would welcome me...and i m just a 43 kg less than 5 ft gal.so anything is poss if u really wanna do it.....

i hope all u wannabes who r gung-ho abt surgical careers really take them up bearing in mind both the positives and negatives involved .....

BEST OF LUCK!!!!!!!!!
