Great thread.
I have one.
My mother is suffering from leg stiffness and well as stiffness in the hand all of a sudden.
Sleepliness is accompanied.
I think she is on depramine-75, alprazolam, and quetiapine.
Drug overdose?
She used to suffer from Insomnia, therefore on depramine since more than 15 years now.

2 weeks back she started feeling arthritis like pain in the joints of her legs as well.
She is obese, no diabeters, but high cholesterol and high triglycerides. 1 gall stone is present as well.
Age 60.

Thanks for the help.

Dear Monica,

We will think about the common causes 1st.

The most common cause of the current symptoms should be Osteo arthritis. (only if OA is excluded after an X-Ray i will go for other diagnosis)

In osteo arthritis the joint pain (often a deep, aching pain) will be worsened by movement and improved with rest. So does the pain gets relieved on rest?

Is there Stiffness in the morning or after being inactive for more than 15 minutes? If there is, it an be due to Osteo Arthritis.

Only point contradicting the diagnosis is the sudden increase in stiffness. How sudden was it? I mean did it happen by one night/one hour/or even faster?

Depramine (Imipramine hydrochloride) & Alprazolam wont cause muscle stiffness usually as a side effect even though they produce sedation. And long term use of both of these wont usually cause muscle stiffness as side effect.

Long term use of Quetiapine can have some ill effects, but the same drug is more safe when compared to other drugs in its class.

What you need to do is,

icon_arrow.gif 1. Examine the joints yourself for any swelling , tenderness or limitation of movements.

icon_arrow.gif 2. consult a physician - preferably an X Ray of the Knee(to check for narrowed joint space) is also advisable.

icon_arrow.gif 3. Consult the your doctor & report the excessive sleepiness. This can be cured by a mild dose reduction(if the sleepiness is hindering with day to day activities.)

Thanks for your help BGM. Problem is i am not at home, and i cant examine my mother. I am like 7 seas away.
The stiffness came in quite suddenly, within a day or two.
She is quite restless as well, contradicting her medicines. She cannot sit or stand for more than 10 minutes.
I probably think its an interaction between sedative drugs, plus Arthritis.
She has relapse insomnia, even though she was on the above drugs since a year. She added another sedative to the mentioned drugs, since 4 days now, to get sleep.
Hopefully my Mom is getting reviewed by a Psychiatrist as well as Orthopedist today.
The sleepliness and restlessness is hindering everyday activities.
