These data don't give the real picture. As trustme pointed out, very few IMGs apply to EM. The proportion of people who get their chosen branch governs its competitiveness not the absolute number.

most people i have talked to has no idea about emergency medicine as a speciality..... many compares it to the 'casuality' in their parent medical colleges or their work as a medical officer in 'casuality' !! believe me its entirely different.... and it has little in common to the 'casuality'!! one of my friends at AIIMS says he has done few months rotation in critical care during his PG, so he's well versed in emergency medicine!! there's a lot more to it .... and there's no better place than the US to do a PG in EM .
