I don't think It'll be a good idea for me to answer that question as we may have a different preference in cameras. I would suggest however that you check out camera review sites like dpreview and dcresource.
Things to know when you're buying a camera is to know the model of the camera. I would suggest that if you have time, go to a camera shop and test out the different types of cameras and see which ones you like. If you have a number of options, check out the reviews then decide which one is best for you.

My camera olympus camedia d-535 ,3.2 megapixel makes funny noise while switching on and of- was there frm the beginning Its annoying while i clik pics in say cme or conf how to reduce it? No details given in manual!

sony cyber shot eries is gud..but go for lithium battery ...6800-7000 range camera in sony does not have lithium battery...but lithium battery is avialbe in this range in kodak and other companies

i've myself confirmed it after seeing picture quality of sony,nikon,olympus,cannon , kodak

mine is sony dsc T20 8.1 megapixel 3x optical zoom
its price was 17k in showroom but i got it in 10k in gray market plus 1yr shop guarantee
thr isnt ne prob in it (m usin it sinc 8mnths)

the picture quality is mind blowin
