Quick Scroll to all Psychiatry aspirants 07.28.07 (11 months ago) #22

This is a reply not only for parin but for all Psychiatry aspirants......i'm a final yr Psychiatry resident at GMC , kota, Rajasthan ....my only passion throughout my MBBS period was getting into Psychiatry ....because it is still the least understood branch & like most of us i was deeply interseted in knowing the exact detrminants of human behaviour & emotions. It is a branch very different from rest of medical science....This is the only branch which sees person as a whole, biopsychosocial model. It uses all ur personal skill to diagnose & mange disorders..there r not strict guidelines...no definite etiologies,no investigations to help...Initially i was also frustrated by prognoses of patients....but then i recognised my frustration was a result of my overexpectations from the treatment...so after limiting my expextations i'm satisfied for last 2yrs...subspecialities like child Psychiatry ,consultation Psychiatry (it utilises all ur MBBS skills), deaddiction Forensic Psychiatry r really interesting.......& MOST IMPORTANT THING IS OUR KNOWLEDGE OF BRAIN FUNCTIONS & MENTAL DISORDERS IS INCREASING AT A GR8 PACE............SO PLZ DON'T GET FRUSTRATED.....JAIPRAKASH

i found the discussion[started by you ] quite stimulating.i will like to add a few relevant points at this stage of the discussion:
1. the experience you described after joining residency in Psychiatry is not limited to Psychiatry .infact during the course of their residency i have seen many of my colleagues and seniors entertaining such thoughts across the full spectrum of various specialities.it may be an integral part of the evolution of a specialist.
2.the knowledge gained in mbbs is required for Psychiatry more than any other discipline[based on whatever little bit i know about the discipline] as in order to be a good psychiatrist one has to be as skilful[if not more] as a person who has specialised in medicine as one of the essential prerequisites in reaching a psychiatric diagnosis is ruling out the possible general medical conditions first.
on the whole no particular speciality is perfect and each has its own charms and drawbacks.this was my personal opinion and i apologize if you find it a bit offending in anyway.wishing you good luck in your future endevours

thats true..grass always looks greener on the other side!!...
i am into Psychiatry for last 6 months...and i have enjoyed it immensely...
its unfair to compare the prognosis of physical and psychiatric illness... having said that i think this is the only branch where cure is possible without medications!.. i have also started using my thinking hats much more than before..cos this field is more challenging and more interesting than it looks from outside...

CRF, HTN, DM , osteoarthritis, autoimmune diseases....people realise that they have to live with these conditions cos they have no other option....the same is true with many psychiatric illnesses....but people dont want to accept this because of the stigma associated with it. people dont realise that they can run as much as they want, but can never hide!...
