Hi. Actually I had enquired a PG student of Aviation Medicine and then got some details, hope it would help all aspirants of Aviation Medicine.
Actually, the Av.med deals with lots of engineering subjects as well. My opinion is that it is - 50% a mix of Physiology and aeronautical engineering and the other 50% is all other subjects including medicine, etc.
There are a total of 7 seats (I think so) in IAM, Bangalore (the only institute providing MD in Aviation Medicine in South-east Asia). Out of the 7, 4 goes for the armed forces quota (only for those who are from AFMC , Pune or there are other criterias as well like to have worked or undertaken training in some military forces. Actually, the PG student told some 2 year training course in military forces) and then 3 for the civilian. A student from military background gets free hostel stay with food and also stipend but civilian avials none of the facilities.
After the MD Av.Med the scope in India is less but it is said that the scope abroad is reasonably good. the PG student told some of his seniors are working in Private Airline Company (as a Company Doctor to treat staff of the airline as well as the passengers) of New Zealand and Australia and are paid good.
There are certainly chances of doing further specialization in Space Medicine and so on and ending up in NASA but how many have done it- I don't know. The job prospects in India after doing MD Av.Med is - you can join as a teaching staff in IAM itself, join HAL, ISRO, DRDO, IAF - but, here again, the preference is for a doctor of military background and civilians are less prefered.

I don't know when the application forms are out. Last year, when I enquired, it was out in december and the exam was in feb. If you are interested in Av.Med then enquire right now.
