PLEASE NOTE ALL FUTURE PLABBERS AND THOSE WHO ARE WAITING FOR JOB

FOLLOWING IS A BIT OF ADVICE FROM BRIT COUN AND GMC,ROYAL COLLEGES ETC
PLS NOTE LAST PARA

Obtaining training posts

Training posts are obtained by open competition in response to advertisements in medical journals such as the BMJ and The Lancet. Doctors may be invited to attend an interview. Doctors should not apply for training posts until they are notified by the GMC that their primary medical qualification is recognised as eligible for full registration or accepted for limited registration and they have passed, or been exempted from, the PLAB test. Once an approved training post has been offered to a doctor by a hospital on the understanding that he or she is eligible for limited registration, the GMC will grant limited registration for that post and the appointment may then be taken up.

Doctors who come to Britain on an ODTS sponsorship or who are officially sponsored by such bodies as the British Council or the Association of Commonwealth Universities are placed in appropriate training posts by their sponsors.

Overseas doctors already admitted to the UK for permit-free training may undertake short periods of work in hospital 'locum tenens' appointments, without the need for a work permit, if the job is related to their training. Any period spent as a locum will count towards the four-year permit-free period. These posts are most numerous during the summer and are advertised in medical journals. Please note that certain locum appointments may not be regarded as acceptable training experience.

The GMC and the British Medical Association (BMA - see section 14) cannot assist doctors in obtaining employment or training posts in the UK, neither can the British Council unless the doctor is under official sponsorship of the British Council.

PLS USE THE FOLLOWING EMAIL IDS OR ADDRESSES

National Advice Centre for Postgraduate Medical Education (NACPME) information service

The National Advice Centre for Postgraduate Medical Education (NACPME), based at the British Council, Manchester, provides information to overseas-qualified doctors on postgraduate medical education and training in the United Kingdom (UK).

All British Council offices overseas hold information on medical training in Britain and initial enquiries should be made to them. For those countries where there is no British Council office, doctors may write direct to NACPME. Overseas doctors in the UK may visit or telephone the information centres in either London or Manchester (see Useful addresses).

FROM NACPME BRIT COUNCIL WEBSITE
Q What are the work prospects in the UK for overseas trained doctors?

A As stated above, hospital posts are advertised in the BMJ and The Lancet, and would be applied for in open competition with doctors from the UK, EEA and overseas.

There is no overall control on the numbers coming to the UK to take the PLAB test or to seek posts. There is currently strong competition for most hospital posts. Information is available in the NACPME sheet Notes on Training Positions in the NHS for doctors not from the EEA.

FROM NACPME BRIT COUNCIL WEBSITE
Q What opportunities are there to work as a doctor in the UK?
All hospital posts which are advertised are applied for in open competition with doctors from the UK, EEA and overseas. At present there is strong competition for most hospital posts, especially those in General Medicine and Surgery. For further information, please refer to NACPME sheet entitled Notes on Training Positions in the NHS for doctors not from the EEA.

FRON NACPME BRIT COUNCIL WEBSITE
Q How can I apply for pre registration house officer jobs?

A Overseas qualified doctors are strongly advised to complete their pre-registration (Internship) in their own country. In most countries, the period of internship for doctors is designed to complement and build on their undergraduate training. The number of PRHO posts available in the UK is related to the number of doctors graduating from UK medical schools each year and opportunities are, therefore, limited.

And what`s so 'good' or 'news' about whatever you have posted above? You have just lifted portions from the British Council website and pasted it here. Anyway its common knowledge that getting a job nowadays is extremely difficult and people taking their PLAB now would have a very hard time finding employment here...i have a feeling that many may have to return unless they are ready to stick out for a year or more without a job(and pray).Things are going to get tougher from next May as 10 more countries are slated to join the EU and that includes the Eastern European ones where there are too many docs and the pay is low.The most alarming fact is that the UK is one of the very few exisiting EU members who have agreed to let people from these new member countries to work here without a work permit( Germany, Spain,France and Italy haven`t done it)..So that means..come May competition for jobs of all sorts would be extremely fierce as these people don`t need to sit the PLAB or get a work permit if they want to join a trust job(and you thought things can get much worser than it`s now, huh?)

Besides the UK government has brought out a draft document which outlines the ways in which they plan to promote EU 'integration'..and it includes blatantly favouring people from the new EU members for employment here...so the'equal oppurtunities' crap goes straight out of the window.

I wouldn`t discourage people from coming here...because people wouldn`t believe me anyway..Everybody back home thinks that the NHS is waiting with extended arms to lap up any doctor who cares to come here.Well, nothing could be farther from the truth. So my advice to whoever is here already would be....give it a fair crack and hope your prayers are answered. My advice to people planning to come here would be..give it a try,by all means, but bear in mind that its more likely to be a sheer waste of time and money. So don`t expect much when you board the plane to the UK and always have a backup plan in place.

Bye!
