How to Download Videos from YouTube?

Downloading the file into your PC

You need the Mozilla Firefox browser to do this.
If you don't have Firefox, download it from here,

After installing Firefox, Go to the Mozilla Add-ons website
and install this extension : Video Download Helper 3.0.1

This will add a "Video Download Helper icon" in your browser.
It looks like this when there is no media in the web page.

Now go to the You Tube page from which you want to download the video.

The "Video Download Helper icon" gets animated when it detects the media in the web page.

Now click on the arrow near that icon, You will see the name of the video. Click on it.

Save the video in your desktop.

Playing the files in your PC

The videos downloaded from YouTube are Flash(flv) Files.
These files wont play in Winamp or Windows Media Player.

Download K-Lite Codec Pack 3.8.0 FULL from here, (13MB)

Install it in your PC.
K-Lite Codec Pack lets you play almost any movie file in your PC.

After install, Go to "Start" --> "All Programs" --> "K-Lite Codec Pack" --> and open "Media Player Classic"

Drag and Drop the Flash file into the player.

Applian FLV Player

This is another free player which can be used to play FLV files.
The installation file is only 2MB.

The player is more easy to use while handling the flv files.
One thing you need to remember while installing the software is that,
avoid installing the toolbar or downloading the demo.
The toolbar is not troublesome but its un-necessary.

another way is to download via a site called javimoya, you input the address of the video from youtube and it gives you the file to download
Youtube video downloader is a program which helps to directly download the file, it also supports conversion of the downloaded video to a no of popular video formats.
As for plain .flv files I think FLV player is the best software out there.

Yes FLV player is indeed the best player for FLV files.
The "seek" function(for flv) works the best in FLV player.
Players like VLC doesnt support the "seek" function for flv.
