Quick Scroll Job situation..where is it headed? 10.25.03 (5 years ago) #1

Many people think that having a PG degree would get you a job here in no time.I don`t think having a PG would be hugely benificial..it may slightly increase your chances of getting shortlisted but the problem is you are in competition with people who have already been working here and any UK experience(even 6 months) carries more weightage than any fancy PG from your home country(check out the shortlisting criteria for various posts).Besides, I have seen many cases in which PG degrees actually work against your cause. What`s the point of getting training if you have already got 2-3 years specialist training back home?Age is also an important factor.PGs over 30 are struggling to get jobs because of the ageism in practice here...they don`t think you have got enough in you to go to SPR level and beyond if you are 30+.I know 3 Medicine PGs here who have been without proper jobs for almost a year now..One of them applied for 70 openings in August and wasn`t shortlisted even once.

Take the case of this dude Ausepawhatever himself...he has landed a job in A&E for 6 months. So he will be back in the job market in time for the August rotation. So its with the likes of him that fresh Plabbers(even guys with PGs)would have to compete..I think by next Feb it would be almost impossible for fresh Plabbers to get shortlisted anywhere. The competition would be basically limited to people who have already been working here.

Quick Scroll competition 10.26.03 (5 years ago) #2

I dont think that competition for jobs will be between already existing SHOs in future so that no short listing of new candidates.
Because each yr some percentage of SHOs leaves the job either for higher education or to return back, creating vacant posts!
Infact it is true that competition increasing, but if u have a PG degree in ur speciality with at least one research paper in ur name, then defentely u r in a better position to get job compared to other foreign doctors.
But always luck play a role!!
