This is just a general checklist for all things in Ukraine, that you need to consider before getting admitted there.
I may add or delete some points eventually.
1. Ukraine and Russia
are two different countries, with two different cultures and loads of other differences.
2. The education system in Ukraine is similar to the Russian system in many ways, but also differs in may ways.
3. Education in Ukrainian universities differs in states of Ukraine, some are european recognised, some are not. Some are MCI recognised, some are not.
4. Medical education in Ukraine is hour and credit based, you complete a certain amount of hours in a specific subject, and you get a 'Zachot' a bonfide signature from the teacher in a book called credit book, that you have completed such and such hours of such and such subject.
Missing classes will result in trying to cover up these missed hours on thursdays and saturdays. In some universities, you may have to pay to cover up your missed hours.
5. Some Medical Universities are MCI recognised, not all of them.
6. Most of them are WHO recognised.
7. Every such Medical university has a authorised agent, who has sub-agents in various regions. Please question and confirm these agents to make sure they are the authorised ones.
8. The official language of Ukraine is Ukrainian, but depending upon the regions , you will have to learn and speak Russian with patients.
9. Many Medical Universities have their own websites, you may email them or call them to know more about admission procedures or/and authorised agents.
10. Also get in contact with students who are already studying in the university you prefer to study in.
11. There is always a catch to everything, if the situation and conditions seem too rosy rosy, then may it is not, or maybe it has a catch.
12. Always try to enroll in universities that have courses taught in english, you may want to learn russian to communicate with local patients, but ultimately you have to give the MCI screening exam and practise in India.
13. Every student that goes to a medical university outside India, gets a MCI document stating that when the student shall return after completing their respective MBBS courses outside of India, they SHALL have to give a screening exam in India before they do their Internship in India and get their REGISTRATION NO. In India.
14. MCI exam is mandatory for every student who does their MBBS outside India.
15. Unless you pass the MCI Screening Exam, you cannot be given an opportunity to do your internship.
16. If you dont do your internship in India for a specified amount of time, you shall not get your REGISTRATION NO. from MCI.
17. Ukrainian embassy holds interviews for students who want to study in Ukrainian Medical Universities. These interviews contatin questions as well, so be well prepared.
18. Admission processes can start from as early as May or June. The process includes contact with an authorised agent, giving him the signing amount, and then getting an invitation from the university from him.
19. Next, you need to get a Eligibility Certificate from MCI, so that you are able to give the screening exam once you complete your MBBS.
20. Next, your documents, including 10th and 12th marksheets, will be translated to ukrainian or russian by a official translator.
21. You shall be briefed about the university, place, cost of living and everything else concerned with the living and studying environments.
22. Your interview in the embassy shall take place, and once you get the visa, you should get ready to fly before September 1st of every year, if possible.
23. The later you go, the more clases you miss, the more hours you have to cover up on saturdays.
24. Always travel in batches and never alone, this way you wont be home sick soon, or shall not feel like an alien in the region.
25. Not all universities teach in English course, while some teach in French and English as well.
26. Not all universities of Ukraine are good enough to study, due to reasons concerning locality, resources, people, etc etc.
27. Ukraine is distributed , not geographically, but more so like social- politically into pro-russian states and pro-American states. The cities that lay closer to Russia
, are more pro russian, while the cities that are closer to Europe, are pro-europe or pro-USA. These socio-political conditions influence the people, living conditions and have a direct or indirect effect on the education quality
28. Universities who teach in English, are more preferrable since you will be practicising in India.
29. Job scope for doctors in Ukraine is very poor, you may get employed, but the pay is terrible, unless you work in a private hospital.
30. All hospitals in Ukraine are government controlled. There are only 1 or 2 clinics that are private and the charges are exorbitant. Your classes shall be held in these government hospitals, so you shall see ample amount of patients.
31. Corruption exists in Ukraine.
32. Public transport, in the form of Mini Vans, Trams, and Buses exist in Ukraine, and are most preferrable to travel to and fro. Going by a cab, alone, is very expensive, if you have 2-3 persons more, you may share a cab, which might be convenient for some people.
33. Some Universities provide furnished rooms, most of the dont, so you have to inculcate expenses concerning your room furnishing, right from wallpaper, to tubelights, to carpet and fridge or computer and utensils as well.
34. Generally hot water is supplied to almost all the hostels, but sometimes problems do happen.
35. You may live in flats, but its better to live with a few friends ina single flat, to share the cost, as well as try to be secure.
can i add a few things, for those who r less inclined and deviate during stay, such students face problems and here is how to solve them!
1. your passport is lost- go to univ and inform the person in contact with OVIR, dean and if possible to OVIR itself.lodge a complaint!u should always keep a xerox copy of all the pages of passport, meaning first, second, those with registrations, with stamps of entry, exits and last page and any one other than that which has stamping done!this will go a long way in helping u out!reach kiev/moscow, university would give a spravka for free movement and reason for doing so!reach embassy as soon as possible!tell them tht ur passport is lost, they should make a new one for u!in Russia
cost is 200$ only for making, besides the transport!all n all it takes around 300-400$!so be careful, keep student card instead of passport while travelling or moving around!any prob with passport post it in forum i will tell!
2.You do not like the uni and want to change it!u need an AKADEMECHESKAJA SPRAVKA from institute, not easy to make,u need to grease people in uni, after tht u need to send passport copy to uni where u wish to relocate, get an invitation come back to india, inform MCI get a new eligibility, and then leave from india!sounds troublesome, change is always difficult,so until situation i bad enough,do not think of changing!stay where u are!
3.You have a GF and want to settle in Russia
or ukraine!bad idea!but then who knows!during holiday when u r back in india go to court and make an affidavit tht ur single not married!collectors office will give it!validity is 6 months generally!go back to Russia
/ukraine get registered marriage done!inform indian embassy!and also OVIR!get ur self registered at your parners place!then u get a VREMMINO PERIGENTSVO!(temp living certificate) for 3 years post which is passport!god bless u after getting the russian/ukranian passport!
4. Problem passing, give PODAROKS (Gifts) esp tea and coffee from india, Russians are fond of gifts!they will go out of way to help u!i m sure if ur goody goody to talk no problems will ever arise!
5. Hostel change, room partner change, batch change(group change) and all those irritating changes!
no need!go to bed and sleep!open book and start reading u will forget everything! (sometimes the need occurs, please refer to your dean or Indian student association to sort out problems.)
so best of luck and wishes to all!

akrhsahni, this thread is about Ukraine, so please post passport problems specific to Ukraine.
In Ukraine, if you lose your passport, lodge a complaint, inform the Ovir and your dean, and call up the Indian embassy in Kiev to make a new passport. I think it costs around 100-200 dollars to make a new one, and the transport itself wont go above 30-40 dollars.
You can call up the embassy in advance, or fax them a xerox of your Passport and ask them to make you one, and then receive it.
