Quick Scroll Cannulation 05.01.08 (2 months ago) #19

Remember, in most OSCE stations it won't just be a case of inserting the cannula - most are 'insert a cannula, prescribe and hang IV fluids' or 'insert a cannula, give a drug' where they question you on drug interactions and side effects. Sounds obvious but always check the drug chart first!!

In response to one of the posts above, in the UK we DO flush with 10ml normal saline, unless you're being naughty and taking blood from a cannula before hooking it up, in which situation the saline would obviously throw off the blood results. Don't flush with 'water for injections' as it will haemolyse the blood cells.

Happy cannulation!
