Though i'm late in replying, but it is an interesting query so i'll put my view point. I dnt agree with you anihyd.

I'd put it the other way, "Its best to apply with both your steps taken". There is no doubt about it. Secondly remember, repeated rejections can hamper your chances of getting a visa in subsequent attempts.

i agree with Ash B. plzzzz plzz dont go for the visa interview without the scores. that would be the initial and most imp Q's asked to u for the visa. I have done the same and got my visa rejected under 221g (thats not actually a rejection but the VO told me to get the scores to get a visa). i am already in a 3 years PG course in India, had all the other documents in place, have a very good travel history ( to most of the european countries, etc etc), strong financial ties and i told them that i'm planning only for a fellowship and not a residency. From my experience, i tell u that those VO follow a fixed protocol and follow the same which may not be correct. I simply cant digest how can they not understand a simple fact that those post MBBS students applying for residency are the ones who r gonna immigrate as USMLE is not recognized in India (though this is not true in all the cases). on the other hand people like me who have already taken the pains to do their post graduation in India, spent 2 years preparing for it, applying for a fellowship and not a residency cannot migrate even if we want to as we wont be licensed for a practice in US with a fellowship.plus the age factor deters us to start it all over again. But thats not their protocol and they wanna see ur scores before anything else. they have a very complex job to do and we cannot fathom their thinking process. so i feel one must follow the standard protocol and do what everybody does. give both the steps. take the score report of atleast one exam for the IV. and get the visa. I personally have not heard of anybody else (other than me) whose's visa was rejected in the last 1-2 years if u take all the documents.

though a good score does eem to increase our chances of a visa, any score report will indeed go a long way in confirming to the VO that we are serious abt the MLE.

that said, in January 2007, 4 of my friends went w/o writing any step, and two of them got theirs, two didn't. that's how it works - LUCK...!!

Yes one should apply for the Visa atleast with scores of STEP1 or CK. Many of my friends got a rejection stamp just b'coz they applied in the very beginning.

dear doctors this is dr. atif khan from pakistan. I applied for the visa after my step 1 and I was assured that after i bring my step 2 results i would be issued the visa. you know what happened, I went back with my step 2 scores . and they said that you are gonna have to take that interview again and I WAS REFUSED, since then I have applied 3 times but to no use. I dont know what the matter was .though i had scores like step1 ...83 and step2 ...75. But at least i met the criteria set by the ecfmg to pass the exams.I am doing my residency in Hematology in Pakistan and still trying for the visa.................
